Forums - Gaming Discussion - Crytek Exec Says Next-Gen requires 8GB RAM

People use today's standards to say that 8Gb won't be needed, but the consoles must be made to last for years, and 4 years later from now, 8gb will be the same as nothing for gaming, remember that Agnis used a PC with 32Gb RAM, even if they optimize that a lot, I doubt that they could run something like that on a console with only 4 GB.

It's not impossible for consoles to have that much memory....but I don't think they really need it.
6 will probably be the max we'll see.

Why would consoles need 8GB of RAM? Not even a PC fully utilizes that for gaming, and I honestly see that changing in the next few years. Even IF gaming PCs will need 8GB of RAM in the future, consoles still don´t need it because of the better optimisation. My guess remains at 4GB RAM

Multi-tasking. Have a browser or some apps open in the background while playing Uncharted 4 and switch between them seamlessly.
This requires a lot of RAM. Sony will probably go for split ram like they did with the PS3 and Nintendo with the Wii U. I say 2gigs for Apps/OS, and 4gigs for games.

Is it just me or does Crytek have delusions about their place in this industry?

They're switching to free to play games now so naturally they'll be making MMOs, which requrie lots and lots of RAM.

you want 1080p, you need ram,you want real good up to date effects for those pixels, you need ram... and who knows how much ram will be set aside for the os..and if every 720 comes with a kinect, how much extra resourses will be set aside just for that...

It's ok, Next Gen is at least 6 years away.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

I think devs will be lucky if they have half that.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I'm surprised by how developers are insisting on higher RAMs. Consoles are not designed to do multitasking like their PC counterparts, which makes 8 GB RAM's advantage least utilized on consoles. Instead a 4GB RAM(console's exclusive with higher bus frequency) would suffice more than enough for next gen gaming. Crytek better not be eulogizing higher memory requirements to utmost proportions, instead a little bit about what CPU/GPU next gen consoles use.

Well they better start being designed to multitask. Smartphones multitask now. People don't want a single use box anymore. The in-game XMB is one of the slowest, most frustrating software experiences I've ever put up with. You should be able to message somebody quickly while in a game, and a GREAT feature would be to leave the game running while going back to the main OS, kind of like hitting Alt-Tab while in a PC game. That would allow you to open the browser without having to reload the game.

You hit the nail on the head. I agree we need more and people are going to want more. I think most people pn this thread are thinking what they want the first year, not 4 years later. They have not added the extra value.

Not sure why some people assume that 4GB is enough, when we have lot of AAA developers asking for 8GB - and that's what they obviously consider to be minimum required if next-gen is to last as long as this one. Honestly, I don't think something like Halo4 would be possible if MS haven't increased memory to 512MB from originally planned 256MB, so even if they've planned for 4GB I'd bet they will listen to developers again on this one.

As for PC games not requiring 8GB - FarCry3 min requirements are 4GB, high-performance are 8GB - I expect to see lot of games with these sort of requirements in near future.

Really? If I open the task manager while playing 4-5GB is the max, no game I've ever played needed 8GB of RAM

Well, maybe you should report that to Ubisoft and tell them they were wrong and they should change their official "high performance" sys requirements. ;)

I think you're taking those recommandations too seriously. They are set higher than needed to prevent being too low. For example I won't be angry if the recommended processor is a core i7-2600K, but the game runs flawlessly with a core i5-2500K. But if a i5-2500k was recommended and the game wouldn't run on a core i7-2600k people would be pissed. Same with the RAM.

are you considering a 10 year life cycle or your just are thinking of now? what games do now? Seems a lot of people are saying what it needs now. That doesn't mean it will not need a lot more in the future. Sorry but i'm going with what a AAA developers says over what your pc does now.

The games you have played are not the games of the future.

i don't know why they need so much RAM, they have been fine with 512mb for the last 6/ 7 years. Even on PC, most games don't need more than 3gb or 4gb so far

So far, yes. But we're talking about systems that aren't yet released and will be expected to last for at least 5 years. Able to run engines such as the latest Cry Engine, Unreal 4, and S-E's Luminous. Able to support the latest Direct X/OGL features. And of course, all of this at (finally) true-HD resolution, 1080p, while maintening a framerate as smootyh as possible, be it locked at 30 with no drops, or steady at 60. That's not mentioning 3D support.

Now, since it's pretty obvious that the money is made from the console versions of their games (mostly), I can understand why third party developers wish that they could make their vision come true on consoles that have as much under their hood as possible.
