Really? If I open the task manager while playing 4-5GB is the max, no game I've ever played needed 8GB of RAM

Well, maybe you should report that to Ubisoft and tell them they were wrong and they should change their official "high performance" sys requirements. ;)

I think you're taking those recommandations too seriously. They are set higher than needed to prevent being too low. For example I won't be angry if the recommended processor is a core i7-2600K, but the game runs flawlessly with a core i5-2500K. But if a i5-2500k was recommended and the game wouldn't run on a core i7-2600k people would be pissed. Same with the RAM.

LOL, I was obviously joking - I really don't expect any current game to use full 8GB on PCs - but, considering how cheap RAM is, give it few years and we will start seeing games with 8GB as minimum.

Not sure why some people assume that 4GB is enough, when we have lot of AAA developers asking for 8GB - and that's what they obviously consider to be minimum required if next-gen is to last as long as this one. Honestly, I don't think something like Halo4 would be possible if MS haven't increased memory to 512MB from originally planned 256MB, so even if they've planned for 4GB I'd bet they will listen to developers again on this one.

As for PC games not requiring 8GB - FarCry3 min requirements are 4GB, high-performance are 8GB - I expect to see lot of games with these sort of requirements in near future.

It's just my opinion, but that is how your task manager looks like today. Throw 8gb into a console and that resets/lifts the baseline for PC. A few years from now 8gb will be standard, 12-16 recommended for top end PC. I sure would love to see what games look and play like with those requirements.

I doubt they would look much better than some of todays games with mods, so I hope most improvements will be made in the area of phsyics, level design and AI.

Me too. Modded graphics look amazing. AI, physics, animation and rich detailed open worlds are what I want from next gen.

Why would consoles need 8GB of RAM? Not even a PC fully utilizes that for gaming, and I honestly see that changing in the next few years. Even IF gaming PCs will need 8GB of RAM in the future, consoles still don´t need it because of the better optimisation. My guess remains at 4GB RAM

I see this argument often.

The reason why PC's don't need that amount for games is simple.

The Video memory and System memory are seperate pools of memory, some games will easily push 3-4gb of ram used just by themselves and then push the Graphics card past 2gb+ of memory used and then on top of that still stream massive amounts of data from the Hard Drive. - This is in stark contrast to the consoles where typically the System memory and video memory are combined pools.

For example... Battlefield 3 on ultra settings at 5760x1080 resolution alone on my system will use 5.2gb of ram and on top of that it pushes my video cards past 2.2gb memory used at 5760x1080 with 8x Anti-Aliasing.
That's 7.4gb used alone all told, not much left over from 8gb is there? Could use the left overs for a stripped down console operating system I guess.

Then you need to factor in that the machine will be around for about a decade and the easiest way for a developer to make improvements is by giving them "wiggle" room and one of the simplest and cheapest ways to do that is via adding more memory.
Personally I would like them to push way past 8gb and go for 16gb or 32gb. - Maybe then textures won't be low resolution and you might actually be able to play games higher than a 1366x768 resolution a few years after the machines life.

i don't know why they need so much RAM, they have been fine with 512mb for the last 6/ 7 years. Even on PC, most games don't need more than 3gb or 4gb so far

More than 4gb is stupid

How many times did the author use the word "purported" in that article?

Regarding system memory, there are no excuses why PS4/XboxNext won't use at least 8GB of DDR3. I mean really, you can already find 8GB of DDR3 for $28 CDN this holiday season. By this time next year, at cost, I bet you can get 16GB of DDR3 for $55.

I am not saying 16GB will be in those consoles but not putting 8GB would the biggest cop out ever in terms of costs. We are talking about $30 here for 8GB, which means 4GB is barely a savings of $15.

There is one. It's just too slow to be particularly useful. The quantity of memory a console can actually make use of per frame is the bandwidth divided by the number of frames per second so whilst you could have 8GB of DDR3 the effective quantity of memory you could use per frame would be something like:

12GB/S /30FPS = 0.4GB which is an absolute maximum if the bandwidth was say the same as the Wii U. In the best case scenario the Wii U can address 0.4GB assuming perfect utilization however the real world figure is likely less than half of that. If the consoles are going to have 8GB to really make use of it they need a LOT of memory bandwidth to go with it.

Not necessarily. They could go the Wii U route and sacrifice high bandwidth for low latency using eDRAM to avoid bottlenecking issues.

I still say that 16 x chips is too much, we'll probably see 12 in the 720 and 8 in the PS4 giving 6GB and 4GB respectively. And I'm still pretty certain it'll be DDR3 and not DDR4 if they want to keep costs down and have high enough yields to make a 2013 launch possible. Both platform holders know that any retail price bigger than 400 pounds/dollars could cause them problems with getting marketshare.

I think 4GB of RAM should be sufficient for COS, God of War, Gears and Uncharted (my favourite franchises).

Is it just me or does Crytek have delusions about their place in this industry?

anyone answer about how much watts new Xbox and PS will be pulling? cannot find any articles based on it yet.

I don't think you'll find any, seeing how there are nothing but rumors right now. My guess is above 70 Watts, since that's what the WiiU pulls once a "demanding" game is running.
