Despite my lower than average post count, I've spent an exorbitant amount of time in this brief life reading about videogames. If we face facts, then it becomes clear as day that these thousands upon thousands of hours have added very little to life.

Have you ever considered that you could've learnt to play the guitar, or read hundreds of books instead?

Don't you think it's just plain f*&$ing stupid? The fact is, many people spend more time reading about videogames than they do playing them. That's just a little bit insane.

Sometimes I go on the internet (specifically VGC), with the express intention to waste time.

I believe we are fundamentally limiting ourselves through this behaviour, by rewiring our brains in a totally useless way - jumping from one topic to the next. I can say this, because I do the same -> This is not a holier than thou speech.

Nope, because I want to be in the industry professionally. Though I do think it's a little crazy that I spend probably double the time talking/writing/reading about video games than actually playing them.

You're still young, so you could actually get into that type of position...

You are redeemed!

I voted "maybe a little", and "so what?" is my answer. Most things you enjoy doing can be considered a waste of time, and "cuz I feel like it" is reason enough for me to do whatever I want. If it makes you happy then so what?

I don't post a lot, but I do like reading about video games. Mostly news about upcoming games, but I also like reading or watching anything about video games.

There are days and sometimes weeks that I go without playing games, but there isn't a day that I go without checking a website for the latest gaming news.

I don't consider it a waste any more than any other form of entertainment. Fishing fans watch fishing shows and read fishing magazines, but probably don't fish every day. Sports fans watch a hell of a lot more sports than they play. In fact I'd bet that most sports fans don't play sports on any kind of a regular basis but they probably read and watch sports stuff every day.

Entertainment isn't a waste of time if you enjoy it. It's only a waste of time if you grow tired of it and still do it out of habit.

Yup. My life would be a lot better if I substituted all my time spent surfing VGChartz for something more productive or practical.

One thing VGChartzi-reading has harmed is the way I read. When I read posts on VGChartz or any other forum, I don't really get deep into what I'm actually reading. I usually just try to comprehend the text in the simplest and fastest way possible. Oftentimes, I find myself speed reading through posts skipping through entire phrases. Of course, this shallow form of reading requires very little energy and attention.

Unfortunately, I've found myself using this same method of reading on other, more energy-demanding texts. I tend to treat texts intended for deep reading like its some other shallow post on a forum. Needless to say, this has not been a good thing.

Well, I have read hundreds of books, enough that I struggle to find more that I want to read, and I don't want to learn to play any instruments. Sure, I'm wasting time, but that's pretty much all that life really is, for the most part. The key is to find a waste of time that you enjoy.

Well, I love learning about the industry as a whole. As far as gaming goes, I think spending hours upon hours playing multiplayer for the latest COD game is wasting time. I love reading/writing about innovative and exciting games as well as my personal gaming experience.
It's also fan to see fanboys arguing.
