I can't say which is better since I only have a 3DS, but 3DS is slowly becoming one of my favorite Nintendo handhelds of all time.

I also think you should look at future releases in the upcoming months for both systems (Note: This is North America and only tracking the first three months of 2013):

3DS

Feburary

Fire Emblem: Awakening

Etrian Odyssey IV

Brain Age: Concentration

March
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (no NA date confirmed yet, but pretty sure it'll come around the same time as Europe)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

+ (eShop)

Tokyo Crash Mobs
HARMOKNIGHT
Vita
February
Sly Cooper: Theives of Time
Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable
March
MLB 2013
Soul Sacrifice (probably, but it could release near its Japanese release)
Don't know what PSN (or other Vita) titles are available, so fill in if I miss anything

Gonna buy Sly 4 to PS3.

So it does skew a bit in 3DS's favor, but considering the Vita has been out a grand total of 10 months and the 3DS is coming up on more than double that, it's doing just fine. Game wise, the Vita is lagging a bit behind in exclusives, but is much better when it comes to ports and the PSN. Vita has virtual console integration, which is awesome, but the Vita has much more to chose from online. on the flipside, 3DS has better support for DS games than the Vita has for PSP games.

Both consoles have comparable libraries with no one handheld coming out the clear victor once all factors are added in (backwards compatibility, downloads, digital only games, ports, exclusives, multiplats). Naturally, it realyl comes down to what kinds of games you like better. If you don't like mario, then there's a good chance the 3DS is not for you. However, Vita still lacks that killer game seller, which mario is.

Hardware wise I give t he nod to the Vita as the much more powerful, capable machine. It has better online, better graphics, better processing speed, a much better OLED screen with better touch capabilities on both halves. However, the price reflects that.

I give my personal nod to the vita, but both systems are awesome.

Excellent post, and a very fair comparison.

The only thing I would like to add is that Metacritic is kind of crap for handheld games for both the 3DS and Vita, especially anything from Japan.  I see so many reviews where the reviewer just doesn't seem to get handheld games at all.  In that regard, I would be much more inclined to play a handheld game in the 60s than I would on a home console.  I think it behooves 3DS and Vita owners to disregard the Meta, for the most part, and find a few reviewers/websites that they trust in terms of handheld content.

Yeah, I'm not having a lot of fun with metacritic ratings. After having beaten Assassin's Creed III: Liberation on Vita, there's NO way that's less than an 85, especially when compared against other handheld offerings.  Gravity Rush and Uncharted Golden Abyss are also undertracked.  On the 3DS, Resident Evil Revelations is a shoe-in for a 90+ game, as is Kingdom Hearts 3D, but one couldn't reach 80, the other is only at 83.  I just find people tend to be far too critical of handheld games.

Hell, there isn't a pokemon game that isn't a 90+ game, yet the last ones hovered around 80?  I know that's still a great score, but Pokemon is deeper and has more content and variety than most CONSOLE games, and it's selling for a mere 35 bucks.  There's no reason it shouldn't be getting rave reviews.  Stagnancy?  bitch please, have you played Call of Modern Black Ops 47?  if Pokemon is stale, Call of Duty is rotten. This coming from someone who actually LIKES call of duty!

3DS XL has just released a Pikachu edition. I also have the Legend of Zelda limited edition 3DS. These points alone mean that 3DS is ten times more awesome than the Vita.

I actually LOL'ed......

OT: It depends on your age and interests. If you like Pokemon, mario..etc then get a 3DS.
If you prefer more Western games then get a Vita.

age has got nothing to do with it, I've got many years on you and I still prefer the DS and 3DS over the PSP and Vita, doesn't mean I'm dead set on not buying a Vita since I have a PSP but if you prefer western games, get a gaming PC, those handhelds are both Japan centric.

I have both and I like them equally. You can't go wrong with whichever you choose. The only difference is the Vita had less time on the market so there are less games to choose from. Then again, the 3DS has barely had any games released for it as well, here in the US at least.

I have both, am currently (really) enjoying Silent Hill* on Vita, but if I had to have one there'd be no contest: 3DS. There's simply more--and better**--games both now and going forward. (Don't delude yourselves: a machine that is taking over Japan will have *tons* of games, and there's no way the Vita will be able to keep pace in quantity, and probably quality.)

*Anyone want to do some MP on this?
**Blahblahblah subjective, it's only your opinion, belaboring the bloody obvious.

The 3ds is better than the vita in no way shape or form. Deciding which one who be the better choice for you boils down to preference and budget. If you like Nintendo games get a 3DS, if you couldn't care less about Nintendo games get a Vita, if you couldn't care less about Nintendo games and can't afford a Vita get a PSP.

3DS=Pokemon.

Do you need any other reason?

That's completely false. There are plently of great third party games on the 3DS. Resident Evil, Ace Combat, Dead or Alive: Dimensions, Code of Princess, Sonic Generations,  Samurai Warriors: Chronicles (to me best launch game), Tales of the Abyss 3D, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Rhythm Theif, Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, Devil Survivor Overclocked,  and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (coming to US this march).
