Forums - Sales - $299-$399 ps3 price point a crucial factor

I cant argue with someone who refuses to see logic

If machine A is released and sets the “Mass Market” price point and machines B and C are scrambling to reach that point…who is dictating what prices should be at?

"if sony was a price hore like nintendo then the psp would be 129.99. the ps2 would be 99.99 by now. wii did nuthin wrong in having a set price for this year sony and microsfot did so they are fighting"--its pretty bad if i point out spelling mistakes--whore not hore, nothing not nuthin, microsoft notmicrosfot

HappySqurriel,

The PS3 is was overprices right? Now that they are trying to make it where it should be, you are saying it will look like it's underpriced?

The PS3 cost to much for a gaming console when it was released. All I see from these price drops is puting it where it should have been to begin with, around $300.

I could see your point of view if they were selling it for $100, but puting it at $300 does not make them look like they are dumping stock.

Hurt was probably the wrong term ...

In the short run you will always see a spike in sales from a price cut, but in the longer term there can be no noticeable improvement if people doubt the popularity of the system; if Sony dropped the price again, every news story about it would talk about how rapid and unprecidented these price reductions were, how NPD data shows the PS3 being dominated by both the XBox 360 and Wii, and how desperate Sony must be to save the Playstation brand (these types of comments do not improve people's impression on how popular the system is).

As I said before, the only way Sony could pull this off is if it is in response to Microsoft cutting the price of the XBox 360 ...

dude....do u even read THIS SITE... the ps3 for like a month now has outsold the 360... and if you think that wasnt because of the 40 gig price drop to 400 bucks just look at ps3 sale on THIS SITE before the price drop..... i mean they sold like 80k a wek on all 3 regions....why did sales pick up....and STAY up because of a price drop................

You do realize that there is something called the Holidays, right? It consists of things like Thanksgiving(Black Friday), Christmas and New Years...

first off sony not nintendo not microsoft MADE the 199.99 price point "mass market" for the ps2. SONYS PS2 sold over 120million (and is still selling). most of those sells are from 199.99 and under. the playstation was the first console to sell over 100 million and do it again on the ps2. nintendo NEVER EVER sold 100 million cept gameboy which means sony set the standard not nintendo.

second release at 600 dollars was a gamble and i will admit they lost it. but its a bigger picture with selling blu-ray movies. sony has WON the movie war that microsoft back HD-dvd has LOST ps3 is on a upward selling spree and 360 is losing ground. and mass market price is different for every product. sony thought having blu-ray and ps3 at 600 was ok with them and the people and it wasnt. so im saying they are looking for a mass market price for the ps3. the I-Phone was 600 dollars and sold millions its first week and people was ok for paying for that.

If you learned how to read you can notice that that was what i was talking about. if wii is mass market price then my car was WAY OVER PRICED. i think (and i think everyone will aggree with me) we would all pay a little more for a ps3 then a wii because it does WAY more. If sony wanted to match nintedo then the ps3 would be 249.99 and they would lose on 150 bucks on each system sold and thats way less then they lost before in 2006 when the system dropped. obviously thats NOT their goal. look at toshbia HD DVD players were being sold for 99 bucks!!!!why you ask? because they HAD TO BE.If sony much more microsoft (who is rich  as hell) wanted, no... needed to be at 250 they would be.

and before you point out spelling mistakes make sure you skip a space

dude come on...the masss market number for one gen cannot and should not be transfered to tehnest--its like saying milk back in the 70's set the price for milk sold in the 90's what a silly thing to say

199. was the mass market point for last gen...this gen you are going to see it around 250-275---which is where nintendo set it--face it right now they are in control of what price is going to be--if sony and micro get down to 300 expect nintendo to got to 200---both sony and micro are playng a very bad game of catch up with the wii

and as far as people paying for "way more" its a relative term---if you just want to play video games and dont own a HD tv or care about BLu Ray since DVDs are still the best option (then it will be downloading)...are you really going to pay more for the extra junk or just buy the game system and save the 200 bucks

@mesoteto,

I bet the Wii does not lower it's price. If the 360 and PS3 get to $250, you will see a lot of Wii+

The Wii is a different thing, the only way it competes against the 360 and PS3, is it takes $250 away from the consumer’s budget. It's not a competing product.

@MrMafoo---dont kid yourself into thinking the wii and 360 and the PS3 are not competing products--they are all trying to get you to spend money on video games---its like saying the I phone is not competing with other cell phones

the ONLY game in that list you provided
R&C, Uncharted, HS, GT, MGS, FF, Haze, Resistance, LBP,

that i would be interested in is LBP. that one looks fun, but that is also 8 months away or so. I am a father who is a gamer, my 3 kids are 3-7 and i would not let the 7yr old play any of the above games except for LBP.

i like the look of heavenly sword but the gameplay Length & the style of gameplay= me not buying, also i am not into FPS games. I do like RPG's but the FF series i just do not care for.

I have to Rationalize purchases vs what i want my kids to see and play, and for me the Wii (yes i have the wii- got 21 games for it (soon to be 23)) has the most family/kid friendly titles around as well as the more mature title i Like to play after they are in bed.

for the record got the wii, 2 ds's (wife and 7yr old), 2 GBA's (3.5yr old twins are going to get them given to them soon)

the twins LOVE watching Galaxy, Z&W, Mario&sonic@oly)

the wife hates the shooters i have (re4,uc,gs) and makes me play those after kids in bed- if we are not gaming on the pc together that is.

Will the 13+ million who bought the HD-players and Blu-ray (ps3,HD-DVD add on, and standalone players) players dont think its junk. and people who wonna play "games" buy a 360 because thats the system that sales the most games so your logic is wrong again.

@Dno--could scarecrow argument--agreed about the people who bought it, but they are not the majority market so acting like they are is wrong

people that bought that wanted it, the average joe is not going to pay more for something he is not going to use , which was my point-

and making comment about software comming from 360 is silly b/c its the same point as before--sure teh 360 sells software but you have to pay more for the extra features like HD and such and if you dont want/need that right now its a moot point for more money....or you can buy the system that just plays games like you want
