Forums - Sales - 360 & PS3 Sales run off - 2013 End UPDATE No.4 (post adjustments)

Looks like PS3 sales correlate pretty closely with Sony's exclusive output. In 2009-2011, Sony's exclusive output was relatively great, and hardware sales mirror that. While in 2012, Sony's exclusive output was tragic, and hardware sales seem to mirror that.

So next year with Sly 4, Ni no Kuni, God of War Ascension, Last of Us and Infamous 3 the PS3 will be same YOY?

Compare this to 360 which will have only Gears of War Judgement. (Correct me if i'm wrong)

In terms of Multiplats GTAV difference between consoles will be negligable (Based off GTAIV PS3 version catching up X-BOX 360 massively)

Call of Duty PS3 has been getting closer with MW3 outselling 360 version this year.

PSP Lifetime more than PSV+3DS Lifetime.

well i did say down 18% but the data was posted wrong yes.  anyway. whats your analysis now?

If the trend continues, it would be below the 360's mark.  However, Jay520's comment about software is interesting.  The PS3's first down year happens to be in one of its worst years for exclusives, while next year looks to be one of its best.  If I had to guess, and next gen announcements didn't have an effect, I would say that 2013 would be relatively flat compared to 2012.

This year PS3 will end selling near 12.5 million.

I can see PS3 selliing 11-11.5 million next year... down but on pair (or better) with this 360 year.

I don't think it's going to be up. But the console will definitely sell more than if it didn't have that lineup.

And was infamous 3 announced?

The PS3 outsold the 360 every year life except the 2011, the best 360 year due the Kinect efect.

Kinect made all the difference last year for 360.

funny, the PS3 still outsold the 360 that year. The 360 had a terrific holiday in America

I can see 12.5M as a possibility, too, especially if it has a really good holiday in EU/Japan.  Though, I see it falling in between that and Kowen's estimate, so ~12M.  I do believe the PS3 is undertracked here, now.  VGC still needs to add ~100K to the America numbers for Black Friday week.  Then, you had Sony state that the PS3 had reached over 70M in shipments on Nov 4th and VGC has it that there were still ~2.2 million consoles on shelves aroud the same time as that announcement.  According to VGC, there were only ~1.4M on shelves when MS announced the 360 had shipped 70M units.  All in all, I would guess we're under by ~300-400K.

@ OP

Looks like Year 7 will be the only year the PS3 wasn't able to outsell the 360.  Next year, however, I see the PS3 being relatively flat YOY.  Maybe 5-10% down, while 360 will be down more so.  The reason for this is the PS3 has quite a few great exclusives lined up for next year, we'll have a full year of the Super Slim affect, and a probably a mid-year cut to $199 (so a $150 Black Friday bundle).

Looking back the PS3 launch was actually better than Xbox 360`s but that was at least expected. Even then.
Xbox 360 started probably the way it was supposed to start seeing as Xbox wasn`t relevant and when 360 came out, PS2 was still relevant.
PS3`s should have done a lot better, being the successor the PS2. It`s mistakes seriously harmed the brand, specially in the US.

Kinect did wonders for 360, yet PS3 has been putting a good fight so far. Difference is, MS has a Christmas seller with Kinect. Sony does not. And that could mean that, at least in the US, the chances for a longer shelf life are higher for 360 - a lot higher if i may say so.

Your predictions are off.

PS3 > 360 every single year.(aligned)
No reason to believe Year 7 would have the PS3 fall behind 360.

Where did your -18% come from?

If the 720 ships with Kinect 2.0 then Kinect 1.0 is done.  Might even be discontinued in short order.

Year 7 for PS3 is this year, while Year 7 for Xbox 360 is last year.

We know the 360 had an exceptional year in 2011 (Xbox 360 Year 7). It doesn't look like the 2012 (PS3 Year 7) numbers for PS3 will be able to match that (seeing as it has been down year on year in 2012). Obviously, as we've all seen the PS3 was up YoY in the US on Black Friday, but it is unlikely that will carry throughout the holidays, so the PS3 isn't going to suddenly match last year's overall performance. Still a very strong year though.
