The problem with Atari is nothing like the problems with Sony. Sega would be a better comparison. Atari released the same console over and over again with only very minor advancements in technology. For each system they released all the exact same games over and over again with only minor graphical improvements. They almost beat the video game industry into the ground. Their final nail in the coffin was flat out lying to their customers. Boasting their powerful 64bit console which was actually a 32bit console far weaker than the PS1.
Sony is struggling with a few not so great hardware choices, but they're doing their best to make the fans happy. Just like Sega did. Atari just didn't give a damn about hardware, software, or the fans, and that's why they've become what they are now.
