"I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes. That way I wouldn't have to have any goddamn stupid useless conversations with anybody. If anybody wanted to tell me something they'd have to write it on a piece of paper and shove it over to me. They'd get bored as hell doing that after a while, and then I'd be through with having conversations for the rest of my life"

Streaming sites are bad. End of.

And Grey Acumen? Isn't Genshiken and Lucky Star a show for those who're a little more into it than the casual watchers?
They're full of references to other anime.
Genshiken is a club that does anything that has to do with anime, games and manga and Lucky Star's Konata is an otaku.

Lodoss War is brilliant, Those Who Hunt Elves for humor and relief from the more sombre ones. Berserk is also brilliant, and Blue Gender is recommendable.
GTO (Great Teacher Onisuka) and Initial D is good for motor (and humor) fans.
Hellsing, like WoW said, is a very very good vampire anime!
Neon Genesis Evangelion is hard not to mention when good anime is brought up, and Ruroni Kenshin is also great (allthough really really really long...).
Dominion Tank Police (classic) and Apleseed are must see's.

Just a few things to note as I agree with most of this however...

Initial D is an excellent anime that has one of the single most god-awful dubs in the history of anime. For the love of all things anime, do not watch this in English.  They even replaced the excellent M.O.V.E. soundtrack in the English version... Keep in mind this is coming from someone who prefers to watch most all anime in English wherever possible.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is good for a whole 2-3 episodes around the time Asaka is first introduced but the rest of the show sucks hard. Dual: Parallel Trouble Adventure > Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Also RaXephon sucks. Whatever genre you like within RaXephon, there are far far better shows for it.

Appleseed is semi-decent as far as movies go but the anime parts of it look really out of place with the CG. Pretty much anything done by Miyazaki will blow it out of the water in story and richness.

since you are interested in Ghibli Studio's films.

I would recommend "Whisper of the Heart", very good and pretty decent Dub as well.

Also, "Howl's moving Castle"

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.

Letsdance: FFXIII (PS3+360) first week in NA = 286K
According to pre-order rate in week 13 (post id: 2902544)

If you like anime with a good story line I'd recommend

Basilisk : Kouga Ninpou Chou, lots of action, story of vengence, multiple twists, strange powers, etc.

Ima Sokoni Iru Boku (Now and then, here and there) Don't be put off by the childish look of this anime, it's actually one of the most violent/sad/beautiful anime I've ever seen.

Chrno Crusade : the end is just so so sad and the rest of the anime so so good.

Azumanga Daiho : just so silly very funny

Samurai Champloo : A medley of different genre by the same director who made Cowboy Beebop

Elfen Lied : a tad bit violent and gore but great anime.

Movies :
Tokyo Godfathers

Old times favourite :
Maison Ikkoku : a love story full of misunderstandings
Hana Yori Dango : same as above
Evangelion
Escaflowne

The first set of episodes for this are great, but just from the story's premise you know it's not going to turn out happily.  The real sad part is that had the ending turned out better it probably could have become one of my favorite anime thanks to a hilarious premise and great characters.

I agree the last 6 episodes were flawed, but the ending "sunset scene" kind of redeemed the screwed storyline for me. The emotions rang so true.

Ah, I forgot. You're absolutely right, I downloaded the english dub first. It all took quite a while, several days infact. But the dubbing was so horrid that I deleted it and downloaded Japanese speech with kl. subs instead! Be warned!

Well you should try something new like

Kanon (strongly recommend this one)
Code Geass
Fate/Stay/Nigth

Think twice before helping a friend in need.

I give another +1 to Death Note. Great great anime, especially the first part. L is so awesome.

Also Gundam 00 is good too if you like mechs. It's much much better than the SEEDs.
