Forums - Nintendo - Why the Wii U might be set up for failure

300 for ac creed bundle for 6 yer old system

300 for a new system going to be supported for 6 years and better hardware.

Seems like Sony should be failing

They're really grasping at straws now...

So now the WiiU's d0med because the buttons on its secondary, and completely optional controller are not in the correct place?

Quick corrections needed for this article.

1. Xbox isnt topping sales charts, PS3 on the other hand is.
It's almost as if xbox fanboys refuse to admit their console is 2nd best. Get a life, ladies lol.

2. Well let's be honest, time to accept PS3 sales as leading the pack.

As for all that wiiu stuff, yeah technically nintendo is in a very bad place. Maybe wiiu will succeed, who knows...up in the air. They have their chance.

One interesting thing is the way we/gamers define success. Gamers will deem a console a success if it sells more units than the competition, even if Sony/MS/Ninty lose a ton of money on the console. From a business standpoint that's backwards, the people who work at the companies themselves do not look at units sold as a measure of success, they look at profits made. In other words, the CEO's and stockholders aren't looking at VG Chartz and hoping the ps3 overtakes the 360 in sales, because whether that happens or not has little to no effect on the long term viability of the company, or the value of the company (stock price), it's just something fun for fanboys to root for. Also, companies don't make much money on the console sales anyway, the biggest profits are made from software sales and subscriptions. If people want a powerful/best selling next gen console from Sony or MS, they better hope their company of choice has the money to fund the research, development, and production of the nextbox/ps4. Whether the ps3 squeezes out a victory over the 360 or the 360 beats the ps3 in sales by 50,000 units makes little difference to what they'll be able to produce in the future for next gen consoles.

Nono, Sony is in a very bad place =) you got them both mixed up ^^

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Yeah, Ninty has a lot of money to use for funding games/consoles/etc.  Ask Sony's accountants and CEO how they're feeling about their companies financial position right now.  Profitability ensures long term success, not selling a few more consoles than the competition 6 years into the gen.  Nintendo is highly profitable, which is good because I'd like to play Mario and Zelda games in addition to the Halo's/Uncharted's for many years to come.  Xbox isn't topping sales charts?  If you're talking consoles depending on the time frame he could be right, but if you're talking game sales and actually making money, Xbox is way ahead of ps3.  They probably make over 100 million a month just on Live subscriptions.

I finally got to check out the controller for myself yesterday, and it felt much better than I thought it would in my hands and the analog sticks and buttons felt pretty good, the only thing that felt a bit awkward was the "triggers" on the back, as I'm used to the 360's triggers now, and the spacing feels different too.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

It's not a big casual hit, and it doesn't quite appeal to the bulk of core gamers so it won't be nearly as big as the Wii, and it probably won't finish first place, but that doesn't mean it'll be a failure. There's still a huge audience who'll buy it and support it for years - the Nintendo fans.

Not a big casual hit? won't quite appeal to the bulk of core gamers (like the wii u mention)?

Nintendo fans? Is that the 20 million who bought the Gamecube? Is that the 100 million that bought Wii?

We'll see what's what after the Christmas Sales.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Exchanging the position of the face buttons and the right analog stick (Wii U vs the other two) is a problem, but exchanging the position of the d-pad and the left analog stick (PS3 vs the other two) wasn't.

Double standards, anyone?

No, since PS2 dominated last gen with a very very similar controller.

Microsoft changed the position of the left analog stick and nobody wrote articles about the problems it could cause. Look at the controllers in your OP.
