Forums - Nintendo - Why the Wii U might be set up for failure

At first people were complaining because the Classic Controller Pro was a ripoff and now they are complaining because it's too different? Nintendo just can't win.

the Wii's life cycle ended premature.

That's actually very valid. This article is weak for other reasons, like $300 being a "tad too high". They'll probably be $100 cheaper than the Orbis/Durango and will be able to make that gap even larger as they'll be room for a price cut around the time they release.

1. The initial price tag is a tad too high. $300 is great by new-console standards — remember the PlayStation 3 at six big ones? — but general consumers don’t see “Wii” and think “high-end electronics.”

Agree with this one, and this might be the reason it could fail. Remember how 3DS was doing at 250? We might see panic pricecut next year if sales don't pick up.

Yeah because high end electronics in gaming devices ensures success?

$300 isnt too high... not even close.

Yeah sometimes it ensures success, but thats not the point. The name has Wii in it, its not synonym for expensiveness. Many casuals are probably expecting a cheaper pricetag since they bought the og Wii a lot cheaper. This is Nintendo's most expensive console.

Nintendo is already selling the Wii U at loss (don't know how much though). I only see that happening in a worst case scenario.

It wont happen and and it wont need to happen.  Ninty have a year to themselves in the next gen.

I agree, don't think Nintendo will do that (only if something unexpected happens) and by the time the other consoles launches the price cut will be a normal one.

Yes the notion itself is valid, I just find it funny how the press has changed their mind compared to pre-Wii-launch.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

To be fair, they have a lot to compete with in that year. The PS360 lineup (GOWA, GOWJ, GTAV etc.), the buzz around the other consoles (likely announcement around E3) and their possible release later on is a lot to combat.

A price cut around november if Sony and/or Microsoft release their system next year would be a smart move provided Nintendo can cut the manufacturing costs enough by then.

He spends 3/4s of the time in the article bitching about controllers and making it seem like the average "hardcore" gamer can't figure out how to use a controller due to different placement and labels. If anything it should be an insult to the "hardcore" gamer.

Yes and seeing that apparently the X360 button setup (color/letters) is now seen as the industry standard and that Nintendo is just ripping it off with slight modifications makes me feel old. And I also want to weep in a corner.

i dont see how the 300 price tag is considered high, specially when the ps3 and 360 cost 250, and the high end ps3 costs 300

I am looking forward to seeing the sales numbers after the holiday so we can truly reflect on whether or not this console ids different enough from the HD twins to sell in numbers above the PS3's and the 360's lifetime rates. The holiday will be nothing but success and is an expectation. Later is the mystery.
