Goomba hands down. I had a paragraph explaining why or at least why I thought Goomba is the most popular character but I pressed that stupid 'RESET' button instead by accident when posting a post. : (

I will say that the MAIN reason why Goomba is more popular than SackBoy is mainly due to nostalgia. Nothing more. Even though a Goomba is by far the easiest, most pathetic, ugliest enemy in pretty much all of videogames, to MANY of us, he probably was the first enemy...no......FIRST OBSTACLE many of us faced when playing videogames.

How often is goomba actually reffered to in Mario games by name? Would people be able to pick out Goomba from name alone, I doubt it really. Maybe from a picture people would know its from a Mario game. Wheras with sackboy its immediately obvious what he is from his name, therfore should be more recognizable.   

I did not know goomba from name and picture... untill this post, I was not aware of the game he is on.

I can't imagine how many Goombas already have been killed in all Mario games by now... not a good sign of popularity.

The first goomba in Super Mario Bros on the NES killed practically every friend of mine the first time they played the game. It took some time to get used to the correct jumping.
