I'd compare it to a Pixar film, because it reminds me of Toy Story quite a bit (if it wasn't easily apparent). And like Toy Story, everything seems strangely plausible. The three fictional games made up for the film (Wreck-It Ralph, Hero's Duty, and Sugar Rush) seem like they could be actual games, like how Buzz Lightyear seemed like he could be an actual toy.

That's where the comparison ends, because I haven't enjoyed a Pixar film as much as I've enjoyed Wreck-It Ralph  since... Ratatouille. So yes, I think it's something Pixar would make if they stopped being cynical buttmunches. Wreck-It-Ralph's story as a simple question: What's the purpose in life if you're a bad guy? Or a glitch? Or horribly outdated? Actually, that's also reminiscent of Toy Story. A really good thing to be reminiscent of. Oh, and Venelope is only annoying if you have an allergic reation to cuteness. Her voice can be annoying though if you don't get used to it really fast. So actually the comparison is to "good Pixar" as opposed to "meh Pixar".

Oh, and Sonic the Hedgehog is referenced in this movie several times. Just to add.

Wow.  My favorite Pixar films are "Up", "Toy Story" Trilogy and "Wall-E" so your standards are even higher than mine apparently.  The only "meh" Pixar to me have been the "Cars" films.

I have an issue with many children characters in films that are loud and grating. I think her voice was part of that, but also the content of the limited dialog.  To give you an idea one of my most hated films is "The Goonies" because it is torture with all these loathsome kids screaming at each other all the time.

Call me cynical, but I still struggle to see games done justice in general media. However, if it is just a solid film I think I'll see it eventually, the debate is DVD or Cinema.

Personally I think both of them started off strong but I lost a good deal of interest at some point (or maybe I've become desensitized to the "we must protect the enviroment and endangered species and stuff" message after hearing it so often).

Venellope, in retrospect, might be my favorite character in the film. The two points where I felt most emotional had to do with people being mean to her. So her attitude is probably just her putting up a thick outer skin. Plus (avoiding spoilers), I think the voice matches one particular aspect of her character.

If I may suggest on Wall-E one thing - I've shared your opinion at one point, then had a discussion with someone far more intelligent than me-.

Try and approach the message of the film not from the enviromental perspective, but rather from the interhuman relationship angle. Try and view it as a story where the main message is that if we, as a species, continue on this self absorbed, technology obsessed path that furthers our own interests and luxuries, machines would end up capable of more complex and intimate relationships than we would be able to manage among ourselves. Viewed like that and with that message observed, I believe Wall-E has a much stronger middle section that it's generally given credit for.

Up on the other hand falls flat somewhere after Dug shows up. The villain was just so so so.....stupid.
