Forums - Sony - PS3 coming out in China

How much will ps3 sell in China?

less than 5 million 129 38.05%

5-10 million 108 31.86%

10-20 million 28 8.26%

more than 20 million units 73 21.53%

Total:338

i hope this is a sign to chinese, hoping for more consoles and with that, games. they are almost completely encapsulated, get barely news from the rest of the world, everywhere censorship. with this, they get a little bit more in touch with 'us'. to me, this is by far more important than if sony now "dominates".

5 million is seriously the first option?? More like 500k. There's a reason it took so long to release it. If it would sell 5 million minimum they would have released it in 2006 or 2007. Even if they sell any consoles, they will literally sell no games. It's like in Korea where they sell millions of PSPs and DS with no software except the 1 game that they are forced to buy from bundles that Nintendo forces on Korea because they don't buy software. Keep in mind they released the PS3 a long time ago (2007 i believe) in Korea despite all of this. China is actually worse than Korea in this respect and that's why they waited so long.

read the Offical post. sony need a certificate to release ps3 there. you dont get that thing in one day

people here say you can already buy ps3s in china in import stores or something but don't you think it's a difference if you can buy a product in your country as import or if it will sell offficialy in your country with advertisement campaigns telling you that you need it and so on? i mean, i can also get a lot of stuff in germany which isn't officially out here but i would say it sells only 1% of those similiar products which are sold here officially and get ad campaigns and so on...

i'm not saying chinese will start to buy consoles then or whatever because i don't know it but i think comparing a product sold and advertised in your counry with a product which only sells because of importeurs doesn't really work in my opinion.

also you most likely have to pay 'premium' prices at those import stores (2-3 times as high as it would be if you wont have to import) ...
at least that is what I have to pay if I buy something from an import store ...

Most chinese buy PS3 for japanese games anyways, like gundam and dynasty warrior, SF, resident evil, and so on. The major battle is localizing games for the Chinese market, if you can do that, then u can break into the market. If you keep everything in English and Japanese and sell the console like it has ALREADY been sold for the past six years with a slightly lower price tag, I think it will be a hard nut to crack.

..There are ads for PS3 in china, but not from Sony. Rather from individual stores. Games are all in english or japanese; so most people who buy games are going mainly for action games (with limited need to read) or Japanese game with heavy anime theme.

It is not censored as heavily as you think, and you can still get world news from google.hk instead of google.cn. You guys need to pack ur stuff and go to china for a visit, Americans tend to think of China as some under developed place or North Korean like regime. Go to Beijing and Shanghai metropolitan area, it's busier and more glamerous than most American cities. My cousin who came to visit me in Los Angeles ask me why are the buildings in LA so small, it's nothing like the movies she said and almost no night life compare to Shanghai where she came from where shops are open 24/7. The business in most LA area close shop at like 8PM with exception to a few restaurants and bar.. Almost everything opening 24/7 in major districts in shanghai at night

Most of china is still not like that you know. Only bigger cities like Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are like this. Most of china is still pretty poor, but you are right it is nothing like north korea at all. Only urban China has any real wealth.

Most of China is still like this...
