Forums - General - Panasonic expects $9.6bn loss !!

"Consumers are increasingly paying attention to content and apps rather than hardware specifications."

Very important part of that article and directly relates to why Vita is failing and what MSony need to focus on for next gen. Its part of what I've been saying in regards to these next consoles will not be "dedicated gaming consoles" but more of media/smart TV-connected devices with robust gaming features.

well, good news for some. They made a profit of 613 million

Oh, so this is another "deferred tax asset" thing, where they're not actually taking the loss, they're just losing a tax write-off that they could have made, which they have to report as a loss.

Well, it should be reported as a loss.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Sony TVs if you look around where I live are still somewhat not that rare to find (they are becoming each day more rare, though)

But a panasonic tv is rarer than a 3 Dollar (in this case Real) bill. The brand simply vanished.

Panasonic is still the plasma leader, which  remains a great option especially for sports & movies (superior motion & picture for the $ amount).

My dad has a Panasonic TV. Yeowch.

Wow, almost $10 billion. That's crazy much.

I feel sad. I remember when Panasonic was truly respected brand. It still is, but it's not the same.

From what I remember Panasonic's revenue is even bigger than Sony's. How can that be? What other big product segments do they have apart from TVs?

LOL Panasonic was all like...

Yikes.

I had a few Panasonic TVs over the years. They weren't too bad. A DVD player that was pretty good too.

All in all, I think we're in the middle of seeing a changing of the guard. If the Yen stays where the companies don't want it to and their demand doesn't rebound, the Japanese companies will end up cannibalizing each other's profit margins for what little room remains. Sharp got their bailout, but I don't think they're going to be able to survive. Panasonic sounds like they're getting kicked in the teeth. Sony needs to handle a debt load that would make some small countries wince. Samsung and the other South Korean companies are rising to a rather frightening level of dominance in the electronics arena. Might we see a future where Korean electronics are king?

Strange to think about.

I just don't get it, why is all the TV company's loosing money? Sony, panasonic, samsung.. wtf is going on here

Are you crazy?  Sony and Panasonic are bleeding money.  Samsung posted a record $6 billion profit including a 20% rise in TV panels.  They're the ones sucking out all the oxygen away from the others.

The profit was $7.4 billion.

This is why sony is trimming down their tv business. You just cant compete with samsung. All the tv manufacturers are feeling it.
