Forums - General - Is Disney buying Lucasfilm really a good thing?

It's hard to know, to be honest. Disney, despite having Mickey Mouse as a mascot, is as cutthroat and profit-oriented as any massive corporation out there. They've done well with some things but completely ruined others, all with money as the totality of their cause. Remember, this is the company that wanted to cut and edit the Studio Ghibli films. Artistic values are not their primary motivation.

However, they do have the resources to hire high quality talent to work on this, and I'm sure there is a long, long line of people who'd sell a kidney to have their names attached to Star Wars. A lot of the artistic talent in Hollywood now were likely influenced by Star Wars growing up, and I believe people who were into that universe as kids will want to see the series done right.

Basically, if the business people make all the decisions then we're going to get screwed, but if they turn it over to the best creative staff then I think we have a shot at something good.

I want to see Star Wars move forward, finally, rather than backwards, and I want charismatic, likable characters played by charismatic, likable, talented actors. As someone else said, Star Wars is Fantasy, only with a Sci-Fi setting. That's why females and children loved it in the first place, because it was immediately accessible. Even my mom liked Star Wars. The Prologue trilogy completely forgot that. It became complicated and self-important and collapsed under it's own weight.

If the next series is a fun and entertaining fantasy adventure with characters people are actually rooting for and a storyline filled with new things, then bring on our Disney overlords.

Disney bought Pixar - making tons of money.
Disney bought Marvel - making tons of money.
Disney buys Lucasfilm - will make tons of money.

Buena Vista and other Disney owned studios can just relax. Just like this year's box office, without Marvel and Pixar, what do they have? The Avengers and Brave made almost $850 m. The rest of the films only made $360 m.
So, this is a great buy.

The Prologue trilogy completely forgot that. It became complicated and self-important and collapsed under it's own weight.

This. The tragedy of the prequel trilogy is that I can see the story that Lucas was trying to tell, and its a good one. And it isn't all about Anakin and the Jedi either. Its very political about the fall of the republic and the rise of the empire. But as a director, writer, and storyteller, he sucks, and I actually believe that he's always sucked. The weakest of the OT is a new hope, and is the only one he personally directed.

I have very high hopes that someone somewhere down the line will say "You know what needs a remake? The prequel trilogy." And it will get rewritten, remade, and actually be awesome, instead of the horrible clusterfsck that it is.

I said it couldn't get worse before, but yeah you may be right... it can, Jonh Carter is proof of that.

Oh god, I wish I could have that money back... and them sue Disney for moral damages.

If Disney knows how to do one particular thing, it's to let the company do what it does and not kill the golden goose. Pixar makes their movies. Marvel is making tonnes of money off of their comics and movies. It was already stated, very specifically, that Disney has no intention of changing or altering the formula except that there will be more movies coming out now for Star Wars, instead of none. They are not going to interfere in the company's works unless they lose money, which LucasFilm doesn't do because of its franchises and divisions.

No need to make a mountain out of a molehill here. Business as usual will go onward, but now we actually get more Star Wars movies instead of no more movies. Less complaining about the 'big, evil corporation' and let them have their shot to see how they do. Like it or not, this is how things are going to go and that's that. You might as well just enjoy the ride.

I am largley a fan of SW because of the prequals.  The phantom menace and clone wars came out when I was in grade school, so like my dad has nostalgia for the originals I have for the prequals.  This now will be able to continue with the next generation of kids.

And it is for this reason that my children will not see the prequels until they have memorized the OT like I did.

No offense to you or your nostalgia, PDF, but the prequels are just bad movies, and even worse Star Wars movies.

I actually liked Revenge Of The Sith, so I do I am not 100% positive that these will be better.  Also, there's the problem with what the trilogy is actually going to be.  Is it going to involve Luke, Leia, and Han?  I'm assuming that they would be portrayed by the same actors.  Do we really need to see Luke with a lightsaber in one hand and a walker in the other?  They could do even worse and hire different actors.  Also, if it's just set in the Star Wars universe but later there will be a great disconnect because we won't be familiar with anything.  Also, remember the Black Hole?  Man was that cheesy.

Also, what's going to happen to Indy?

Well, according to a few articles, the sequels are going to be SW VII, VIII and IX, and those continue the stories of Luke, Leia and Han.

From the Fox news article that wfz posted:
"The seventh movie, with a working title of "Episode 7," is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The trilogy will continue the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond "Return of the Jedi," the third film released and the sixth in the saga.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said Lucasfilm had already developed an extensive story line on the next trilogy, and Episode 7 was now in early-stage development. He said he talked with Lucas about buying the company from him a year and a half ago, but they didn't decide on a deal until very recently as Lucas set in motion his retirement."

I'm not sure about the first paragraph, since I listened to both the Iger and Lucas videos, but I can't remember either of them mentioning Luke, Leia or Han, so the article may be speculating. However it's been known for the longest time that episodes 7 8 and 9 revolve around the three.

This article mentions that the movies won't be based off the Thrawn trilogy, but will be an original story.

As for Indy, anything better than Indy IV will make me happy. As long as Spielberg is involved, I don't care who takes up the role. River Pheonix did a good job as young indiana jones, there must still be some good talent out there. :) Just not shia, I'm sick of that guy.

I don't personally care myself, but this is going to piss a lot of Star Wars fans off because Lucas himself has said that the Thrawn Trilogy was cannon.

The problem with Indy IMO is that they let it go on to the point with Harrison Ford where no one will accept another actor in the role.  They should have kept the series going with different actors like they did Bond.  Shia is awful and shouldn't return.

This doesn't mean the events of Thrawn won't actually still be canon - it just means they won't be the point of the trilogy. I suspect the movies will actually allude to the events of Thrawn, and maybe even coincide with them.

Now my faith that Kotor 3 will be done are reborn.

Oh shit, I like how you put empirical evidence behind my own hypothesis. This time I grasp your humor big time. I am not inclined to think Disney will expand the Star Wars universe in a way I like. This is actually the same way I feel about the Aliens. It is hard to top an original, or even come close to satisfying long term fans. Just look at Mass Effect 3 (I liked the ending).
