Forums - Sales - Am I the only one that thinks Vita will sell less in 2013 than 2012?

You do realize YOU are the one making your prediction true? Looking at just the facts, ie a sweetastic system with Uncharted, Wipeout, Escape Plan, Gravity Rush, Super Stardust Delta, Frobisher Says, LittleBigPlanet, Assassin's Creed, SunFlowers, Smart As, Mutant Blobs Attack, Soul Sacrafice, Killzone, and Tearaway all being 100% exclusive to the Vita and Sound Shapes, Guacamelee, PlayStation All Stars Battle Royal, Sly, Motorstorm RC, Ratchet and Clank, Dust 514, Warrior's Lair, and Snapshot intermixing Vita and PS3 combined with a price cut, the Vita is and will be a device any true gamer should want.

Instead people, you included, cast a shadow of doom over the device. Even though you and every person on this sight (we are all gamers) would enjoy a Vita a lot of them aren't interested because it is "dead." Now I'm not saying you can't or shouldn't post bad news but in the case of these gloom threads you are making your own prophecy come true. Vita WILL DIE like you and many others predict if the internet keeps thinking it is already dead.

So if we keep seeing threads like this (not just from you) then your prediction will be correct. Hopefully however the Vita does good numbers this holiday and shakes a bit of people's lack of faith in it.

I have a PS3, and I'm not interested in a PSV even if it had a price cut, .......I'm not a true gamer, ....and that's a fact!

OT: Price-cut, the thing will move better numbers with some games and a more attractive price.

You can't just ignore the 14 Vita exclusive games I listed and only focus on the two aspects that don't interest you.

It needs to gain some momentum quickly thats for sure.

If Sony cant turn the Vita around rapidly the system will die. Hopefully your prediction is wrong because if we see a 2013 similar to how 2012 was for the Vita then I believe it will be discontinued.

Discontinuing a high investment device after two years?  No way.  I don't think that will ever even be considered by Sony.  Look how long it took Microsoft to kill the dead-in-the-water Zune.  No, with the Vita, they're looking at hardware that becomes more profitable with time, so a steadily increasing user-base in the first two years is not that bad when compared against the significant loss of a huge launch.  All they need to do is convince PSP developers to switch their efforts over to the Vita.  That's pretty much all the Vita really needs.

Sony's stategy is to continue selling the previous generation device at a high profit, which delays the success of the next generation.  Fanboys go crazy over this, but from a business standpoint it's worked pretty well.  It just defers the sales for the next gen until the back-end.  This is exactly how things went for the PS3, which is selling quite well.  Even the PSP didn't really shine until the second half of its life-cycle.

Very good analysis. Hopefully Sony can pull it off!

The thing most of you in here are ignoring is that I doubt Vita is going to get a lot of 3rd parties on board next year. They have no reason to develop for it. The console has tiny marketshare, isnt trending up, barely moves any software, and is more expensive to develop for than 3ds.

I own and love my Vita but to the people saying "Big ganes are coming" I highly doubt you get many big name 3rd party games next year. AC Liberation is going to do pretty well this holiday but other than that I dont see many titles that will move much software at all.

I think it will too... it should have been a smartphone to hit the mass market AND the core user. Now its just hitting a niche % of the core user.

I'm sure they'll make it correctly next time and Vita will be the last "gaming only" handheld from Sony.

You're right with the exception that those "14 exclusives" are predominately watered down ports of games on the PS3. Additionally, they are targeted at a very narrow market of people who universally will own smartphones for the same cost as the Vita and simply keep their core gaming at home.

Nintendo does it smart. They keep games for ALL ages and groups and on their first party content, have a few games that are trully exclusive to the handheld space, i.e. Pokemon. Therefore they are not nearly as cross-market to the smartphone/tablet space as Vita is.

Vita is tailored to a segment of the gaming population that is very small:

  • 15 to 25 (maybe narrower)
  • male
  • wants to play a game that they have on their PS3 on the go and is willing to pay $300 to do so
  • is ok with carrying two or more mobile devices (smartphone + Vita + ??)

That was just a bad business decision.

The only way it can possibly sell more next year is if it receives a hefty price cut. If not its going to sell less.

In two days we'll know better - as long as sony doesn't go for another dirty tactic of "protecting" Vita's numbers.

I expect the forecasts to be slashed (for the 3rd time) greatly for both PSP and Vita - it's currently 12 million (cut from 16 million) - and imo, it won't reach 5, going by this rate.

Nintendo numbers gave us an idea (more like a certainty) that it's doing worse than most of us expect (for example, VG Chartz numbers). Next year is almost impossible to do worse than this one - especially not couting the launch month.

Oh no you didn't!

Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, and Killzone are console IPs with unique stories. It varries from player to player on whether they think the game is watered down but certainly not a port.

Escape Plan, Gravity Rush, Frobisher Says, SunFlowers, Mutant Blobs Attack, Smart As, Soul Sacrifice, and Tearaway are all exclusive and do not exist on consoles.

Wipeout and LittleBigPlanet are unique because they are actually better games then their console versions. LBP Vita could just as easily been called LBP 3.

Super Stardust Delta is the only "port" I listed.

its impossible to sell less in 2013.

Sony will cut the price and eventually bundle it with ps3

You're right, the use of the word "port" was bad. However all the games you listed that anyone would actually recognize are games that are not unique. They are games they are already playing on PS360. Maybe different stories, but they are not going to drive sales to get the small userbase I mentioned above to grab a Vita when they have a PS360 sitting right there.
