Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft screwed up with the Surface tablet...

Of course they screwed up. Did anyone seriously except MS had any chance to break into this highly competitive market where Apple is GOD?

Huge failure as expected just like Windows Phone 8. MS has no future in tablets nor phones.

The only successful business they'll ever have is operating systems.

Performancewise Surface will be average at best. Tegra 3 is so bad it hurts, it should only be in cheap devices. The performance difference you are talking about (Sunspider) is more related to the software optimizations and will be gone before next week.

RT is crap Selnor. Just admit it. True W8 tablets will be miles better than anything on the market as long as you are ready to pay the price but that is another subject.

But yet against its competitor the IPAD it beats it in every category.

Im ready to pay the same price as te market leader IPAD but get a faster system ( much faster in all tests ) and more functionality.

So for me RT is not crap. Compared to the speed of the pro its slower. Compared to current tablet market it kills it.

I will be very happy with its speed and its usage. I for one know what I am getting and what I want from it.

Im sorry that there are people who dont want desktop out there. But hey there is.

Alternitively I could buy an Ipad 3 for the same price and have less functionality, slower loading and app usage and no true multitasking. Eeeeekkk.

I dont want DESKTOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you get it?

The thing is, what you are saying is not true.  Let alone beating the current offerings in every category, you'll be hard-pressed to find a category in which Surface is better than any other tablet.

Let me start. You say "faster loading and app usage". First of all, where did you get this? Most of the trustable reviews say that it isn't really fast. Here is an example from The Verge:

"When I was just dealing with the core OS, the Surface felt like a lively, sophisticated, fast-moving new system, but the deeper I got into apps and the more apps I opened, the more the device seemed to bog down. There were other issues too: video playback in the browser was a spotty experience. Flash content didn't fare too well in either the desktop or new browser, and some HTML5 playback stuttered and dropped frames during play."

" Many of the first-party apps — particularly Internet Explorer in the new interface — felt good to me, but others left me wanting. The native email application, for instance, could be slow to update and unresponsive to touch on a regular basis. Other apps, both first and third-party, could be slow to open, then stall or crash altogether. Some 3D games, such as Rocket Riot, seemed fluid and natural, while others staggered along, seemingly struggling to pump out an acceptable frame rate."

There is hardly any killing here.

"Usage."

Surface hardly provides any usage usage advantages. In fact, it is quite the opposite.

"The promise of the Surface was that it could deliver a best-in-class tablet experience, but then transform into the PC you needed when heavier lifting was required. Instead of putting down my tablet and picking up my laptop, I would just snap on my keyboard and get my work done. But that's not what the Surface offers, at least not in my experience. It does the job of a tablet and the job of a laptop half as well as other devices on the market, and it often makes that job harder, not easier. Instead of being a no-compromise device, it often feels like a more-compromise one. "

I can go on but no need to copy everything here. You can read the rest here: http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/23/3540550/microsoft-surface-review

Though I have to quote this:

"Let me put it this way: the Surface does not seem like a better tablet than the iPad or the Nexus 7 (the two best products in the category as of this writing). Even though it has a very unique and useful interface, and lots of hooks into Microsoft's ecosystem, it still lacks the polish and apps of those two devices. Is the mail client better here than the native mail client on the iPad or Nexus? No. Is the browser superior? Well, it's an excellent browser, one of the best I've ever used on a mobile device — but it's not wildly better than the iPad or Nexus 7 offerings. Is the interface so much easier to use or so much more powerful that it would tip the hand of an average buyer? Not in my opinion. Is the app selection better or more robust in some way? Not by a long shot, and there's no clear sign it will be anytime soon."

The things you've mentioned is not the best in the Surface, it is the worst. It is not really a surprise for me. What you are saying is though, pure fabrication.

You dont get it do you. It does more than ant tablet on the market.

Not really. W8 tablet? yes, of course. RT? No, infact it does much less. Read the review. The things it does more than other tablets are so crappy, there is no point of doing them. It doesn't even do the basic things Ipad and Nexus have no trouble doing. Even it does, it is not a speedy experience as you claim.

Apple totally ruined the Surface launch with the announcement of Ipad 4. I don't think ANYONE was expecting that.

lol, nah they didn't. All they did is piss off a bunch of Ipad 3 customers that bought their iPads less than 6 months ago without giving them a single reason to upgrade.

Wow....this is getting ridiculous with Apple. Now they arent even waiting a year before screwing over their fans.....and they still love them for it. Sigh.

So im guessing people who bought window 7 phones like the lumia 800 that are not upgradable to win 8 are jumping for joy?

The BIG difference is that not many Windoes phones were bought in comparison to Apple products......and MS doesn't do the semi year upgrades as their MO.

It doesn't do more than other tablets.  You do know that there are very good Office apps for the iPad and keyboard attachments/cases? Also iPad can print too...there are many manufacturer direct apps as well as uiversal ones that allow the iPad/iPhone to print to any printer. (Breezy for example)

Seriously though, you will get it once you start using your Surface. You can not live in 'Metro' in Windows 8. Metro has no proper file explorer, no copy/paste, no ability to open USB's. With Surface RT you will end up using a gimped PC-like tablet but with no legacy PC support.

You already sound like a perfect Win RT customer that Microsoft hopes we all are, and even you will run in to issues with Windows RT. Wait till you get your first .rar or.7zip file to unzip and realize you can't do anything with it.

Lastly to everyone saying "apps are coming".  They are but so what? People have bought their apps on other platforms, why would they want to rebuy them on Win 8? Some people like myself have to rebuy the exact same apps on Windows 8 as we bought on Windows Phone. That's just greedy. That's just greedy. If Windows 8 interface wasn't so awesome and it didn't have Windows legacy support, I'd never use Windows again.

Not to mention Win RT will have less Metro apps than x86 as a lot of them can not run on lower end ARM hardware (think high end Games, metro tax software, photoshops...). Also some devs will just not want to make Win RT apps. You like Google search? Google Maps? Forget about having an RT app. Win 8 x86 only...

Nah it's the same thing. Both companies are screwing their customers somewhat. Nokia really should have packed NFC and a dual core Snapdragon in to the Lumia 900 and announced full Win Phone 8 upgrade for it. It would be such a massive hero device had they done that.

Meh I just think screwing over several thousand < screwing over a few million. Call me crazy :P
