Forums - Politics Discussion - Election time, who did you vote for?

Which presidential candidate will you vote for?

Barack Obama 356 55.89%

Mitt Romney 137 21.51%

Gary Johnson 38 5.97%

Jill Stein 15 2.35%

Somebody else 87 13.66%

Total:633

Third parties need to be in the debates. If you are a strong enough candidate to get on enough state ballads that you can get enough electoral votes to win, then you should automatically be in the debates. That's only 4 people this year, and Jill Stein barely got enough. Gary Johnson got enough signatures to get on the ballad in all 50 states and he can't be in the debates? That's BS and you all know it.

Don't fall prey to the democrat vs republican bogus. Forget about both Romney and Obama.

As for me I'm going to write in Ron Paul because I don't like Obama or his twin brother Romney. They're both basically the same person.

Romney is a scumbag, he inherit all his money from his parents. He earned nothing for him selfe and than this bastard thinks he is better than 80% of the American citizens. He thinks that poor people are parasites, how can anyone vote for such a failure?
Obama may not be perfekt but he is at lest not such a arrogant, greedy failure who hates most of the people he should represented as Romney.

But I am not an American so I can't vote, but I really can't understand the american Idiots who vote for such a failure like this Romney. The only thing this scumbag cares is that the already rich people gets richer. And the middle class and the poor ones have to pay for it.

Funny thing is the Ppundits are saying Ohio or Florida are key battleground states, but if the states that look fairly locked in for Obama all go his way then of the toss up states Obama only needs Colorado and New Hampshire to get over the line. This means he can lose Ohio and Florida and still become president.

There are really 5 toss up States. Obama can win with one or 2 of those states falling to him. Romney needs 4 of those 5 to fall for him. Iowa is pretty marginal for Obama, so if that's too close to call then the number of toss up states each candidate needs evens out a bit. But Romney still needs more of those too ups than Obama.

Interestingly the so-called Missouri bellwether didn't go with Obama last time and it's definitely not going with Obama this time, so if Obama wins then it's barometer reputation is severely weakened.

In my opinion, realclearpolitics has a better electoral college map than fivethirtyeight because of how it handles toss-up states; any state where the two candidates are closer than 5% is considered a toss up, and this works better because in this range poll methodology, voter enthusiasm, and likely-vs-unlikely voters make a huge difference.

At the moment there are 10 toss up states, 8 of which both candidates are within 3% of eachoter, and 5 of which the candidates are within 2% of eachother.

Basically, if party turnout matched 2008 it is likely that Obama will win, if it is closer to 2004 it is likely that Obama will lose ...

If you have a series of polls, over several weeks, from various polling organisations, including through the debates, and they all fall for the same candidate and it averages out to 4-5% then the state is probably not really a toss up and the 4-5% is likely to be a true difference. Most polls have a 3% MoE, so an individual poll with a 5% margin is a toss up result. But if you get an ongoing trend of ~5% for the same candidate then the meta-MoE across all the polls drops away and moves closer to <1%. A poll of polls that gives a 3-5% lead to one candidate is outside the toss-up zone, but it's not yet in the locked-in zone. Huffington Post calls it leaning, and it also gives a confidence in the lead of the candidate. So a 3% leaning state with a 75% confidence in the lead is still a pretty fragile state, but a betting man would put money on the currently leading candidate. A true toss-up state, within 3%, with a 60% confidence in the lead would not be a good bet for the leading candidate, and it would be a pretty poor bet for the trailing candidate.

It does tend to be the case that low turn out elections favour the right / conservatives. Heck, wet weather favours the conservatives (because it lowers turn out). But because of the ECV it's not actually national turn out that would indicate the likely winner but swing state turn out. So those fragile 7-8 states are the ones to watch in terms of turn out.

Except 8 of 10 of those toss up states are within the margin of error of those polls, a large portion of which are (probably) over-estimating democrat turnout and under-estimating independent voter turnout.

Now, I'm not suggesting that there will be a massive shift in these states, but anyone who pays attention to politics (especially on an international level) will admit that these polls indicate that the race is far too close in these states to predict who will win.

I have been undecided mostly because i dislike all the choices. However, I have decided I am going to be one of those people that votes against somebody instead of for them. So i have decided to vote for Mitt Romney.

My reasons mostly stem from the early portion of Obamas term when he had a super majority in congress. The economy was in the tank and instead of working on that, he pushed for healthcare that ultimately ends up being a large tax on small businesses. He also didnt bother with bipartisan efforts during this time either.

Basically, I dont like how obama handled his term, and im not a fan of Romney, but I think it I would rather see somebody else get a chance then another term of Obama.

A little caveat here, I live in Utah so my vote doesnt actually matter. Utah will go for romney by over 70%...

That's the worst possible excuse to vote for Romney. First you said Obama had the super majority and worked on healthcare instead of the economy. The healthcare plan he has in place, was difficult to complete, even with so many in congress, as the Republicans filibustered almost ALL things Obama and democrats brought to the table, in an effort to make it appear as if Obama did nothing in his term. So the republicans blocked all forward movement in the nation, for ALL people, just for their own political gain come this election time. So they could say, Obama has done nothing. That's not true. He's done alot despite having the complete ROAD BLOCK that is the republican party. Obama has been working very hard to take care of this nations middles class (which represents the vast majority of Americans) and for you to cast your vote for the candidate that only works for the elite top of the country, is not only harming most Americans, but also yourself.

Regardless of where you live, you shouldn't just toss your vote up to Romeny becuase you think he's going to get it anyway. This is the only time you have, once every half a decade, to make your voice heard, and stand up for "the most right" you believe in. Really think about what your reasons are for voting for Romney, not just because "well the things they say about Obama sound true, so they must be."

I'd love to vote for Gary Johnson (I'd prefer to write-in Ron Paul over anything) if my state allowed it (I think Oklahoma is the only state this election without a write-in or third party option).

So, instead of voting for the two headed monster (Obamney), I'll be abstaining on November 6th.

This is the only time, once every 4 years you get to pick a candidate for your country. I stand by and say, I don't like either, and it's too diffuicult for me to get involved, and really REALLY sort through what the hell is going on here, I'll just sit back and say "none of the above" like in the movie "Brusters Millions". It was a joke in the movie, and it's a joke in real life (not to vote that is). Take the next 12  days or so, to really get educated about what is going on, then make an informed decision. I'd say vote for Obama, but worse than not voting for Obama, is not voting at all. Watch MSNBC in the evenings. Watch Chris Matthews "Hardball", or The Rachel Maddow SHow, or in the mornings "Up with Chris Hayes" or in the evenings "The Ed SHow". All these programs are excellent sources of information about the candidates and why you should be voting for someone.

Whatever you do don't watch Fox news or anything on any Fox channels. It is complete propaganda for the republican party. If you don't like MSNBC watch ABC, or regular NBC, or CBS. Just pick some news channel that you like and get informed. I say not fox, as they purposely bias their news towards the republicans. And what you need right now are facts, truth, not lies, or distortions of the truth.

Please promise me you will vote, for the candidate your believe is the right choice. You can't pick neither, as one of them will be picked, it's just a matter of will you be counted among the people who tried, or the people who did nothing.

I will continue my tradition of not voting because both parties suck and I live in a state that has been blue for every election of my life. If I was forced to vote on the big 2 id go Obama because Mitts 20% mystery tax cut plan seems like it will really screw us.

I'd like to refer you to the post above, where I commented on "Not Voting". Please go out and cast your vote. You have no idea how important it is. Especially if you're planning to vote Obama. It sounds like you have been listening to the candidates and you do have a very good idea what is going on, and that Obama deserves your vote. You never know how things may turn out. Your vote DOES COUNT. Please do make it count, go out and vote. It's the only real American duty we have left in this country. Once every 4 years is it asked of you. Please do whatever you have to, to get out there and register your vote. This is me emploring you to make a difference, and not be counted as one of the millions of degenerates who say so doing is better somehow. It most certainly is not! Thank you.

Thank you for reminding people of something Obama would like us all to forget... his two years with a supermajority and getting only health care done. He can't blame the Republicans for an "obstructionist" congress when they had no power. In fact, there has not been a budget passed in Obama's presidency. This is a first. So yeah, you can blame the GOP for the last two years... but in the first two years they did nothing, either.

You most certainly can blame the Republicans for that. The can filibuster anytime they want. And slow down, obstruct, and impeede the progress at every turn. Which is exactly what they did! This is why it took so long to get the healthcare plan passed! Not just because Obama is lazy, and didn't feel like getting it done that day. It's preciscely because of the Republican party, trying to make Obama look as if he did nothing over 4 years. Make no mistake about it, Republicans filibustered an UNPRECIDENTED number of times, and blocked the nations growth under Obamas presidency for political gain. Don't let their blantant abuse of politics work in their favor by voting for Romeny.

General election mitt is actually pretty moderate.  Although I agree it is hard to know which mitt you are getting.  His history seems to indicate he would be a pretty moderate president though.

I worry about that. Mitt pretty much had to be a moderate Republican governer in Massachusetts, because the state legislature was 87% Democrat. The Republicans in congress today are a different story!

Yeah, but he comes from a pretty moderate family too.  I think the real Mitt is more moderate than people think.  However, he sure has made it hard for people to figure out what he actually stands for.

Ultimately, I think Romney would be better at bipartisan efforts the Obama, he certainly has more experience with it.

I'm just not sure that there *is* a real Mitt. Pretty much the only positions he's consistently held over the past four years are that (a) he wants to be president, (b) he doesn't like Obama, and ( c) he wants to keep wealthy Americans from paying more taxes.

One position that he has been consistent on is increasing the minimum wage to match inflation.  Not exactly a popular position with republicans, but one that i like and one that would certainly help the poor.

Listen to yourself...."ONE position that he has been consisten on...." If he isn't been consisten on anything, there's real cause for concern as to what he'd do as leader of the free world, America. And you went on to say that the one area whre he has been consisten on increasing minimum wage!! Are you kidding. He's said that he plans to get rid of minimum wage, completely!! He doesn't want to have it at all. He thinks employers should be able to pay their employees as little as they want!! Look it up. It's on the record. Please, please watch some news channels like MSNBC and don't watch Fox. It's so imperitive that you get educated on the issues, fast, so you can make a properly informed decision.
