Forums - Sales - Complete Sales Comparisons, Part 6

Part 5

In a CrazzyMan post, he wanted us to only discussing PS3 to PS2 sales, and told us to go make another thread to discuss other sales comparisons, so I decided I'd go ahead and put together a small (ie: LARGE) comparison of the 3 current-gen systems available on the market today.

This is the last of comparisons per region. This 6th part will compare 7th generation sales to 6th generation sales for each console, in Europe, aligned from launch. Weekly sales, total sales, and brief comparisons will be given. Links will be given as well. For size purposes, no graphs will actually be shown.

In Europe: Because of the staggered PS3 launches across the “Others” region, I’m using only Europe, so that everything lines up better

Wii, PS3, 360 Total Sales from Launch (58 weeks)
Wii, PS3, 360 Weekly Sales from Launch (58 weeks)

PS2, PS3, Wii Total Sales from Launch (58 weeks)
PS2, PS3, Wii Weekly Sales from Launch (58 weeks)

GCN, PS3, 360 Total Sales from Launch (58 weeks)
GCN, PS3, 360 Weekly Sales from Launch (58 weeks)

- NOTE: With the differences in the time between launch and Christmas, the boosts from Christmas are slightly different, thus the boost for the PS3 comes a bit sooner

Total Sale Comparison:
PS2 - 5.77 million
PS3 - 3.62 million (roughly 17 weeks behind)
360 - 2.28 million
GameCube - 1.66 million
Wii - 5.83 million

Conclusions:

- The 360, PS3, and Wii have all sold similar amounts near the beginning, but then the Wii started to pull away, followed by the PS3 (who then quickly caught up to, and passed, the Wii sales at that point in it’s lifetime)

- Not much can be said about weekly sales for the 3 current gen systems

- The Wii and PS2 have very similar lings up to this point

- PS3 has surpassed the PS2 sales at that point in it’s lifetime, though the Christmas boost came early for the PS3 (since Christmas falls at different times in the chart); the next couple months will be more telling

- You can see the effects of the 40GBs release (I believe) for the PS3; the weekly sales jump, then decline (a bit) then the holiday season begins

- GameCube in Europe – epic failure

This is the last part, unless I find some other way to look at the data.

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

A long time ago [Feb/March] I predicted In Japan Wii would be a clear winner, PS3 second.
In Europe it would be a close race between Wii/PS3, with Wii edging it out in the end.
In USA it would be close for all three consoles, with either Wii or PS3 slightly in the lead, followed by the other two.

Japan I will be correct, but it was pretty obvious even then.

Europe I think I might have slightly underestimated Wii, but I think it looks like a good prediction so far.

America I did not forsee PS3 to do so poorly so far, perhaps it will pick up.... and again I underestimated Wii.

Couldn't have just made one thread?

Could the PS3 have been helped in the weeks-from-launch comparison vis-a-vis the Wii by the timing of Christmas 2007 in its life cycle?
