Forums - Gaming - Why I think Nintendo left out cross game chat

There seems to be a bit of a buzz around vgchartz about the exclusion of cross game chat on wiiU. Many gamers felt it to be an injustice for a new console to lack this feature, and nintendo needs to remember that the wiiU is geared at all gamers, "hardcore" and casual and not everyone may enjoy there quirky sound effects and music. Gamers are use to chatting with each other as the are "immersed" in their games, I mean how long are gamers suppose to keep hearing POW POW BOOM coming from their speakers and not want to talk with someone.

Just because this is a company that music and sound effects in their games are as iconic as their characters themselves, everyone knows that sound effect in mario when he gets an extra life or the short music when he dies, the chime when you unlock a secret in zelda, or that slot machine noise when you hit a ? box in mariokart, they are a part of the games image as the characters themselves. Nintendo probably thought what would the gamer rather hear worthless chatter or the zelda theme (in full orchestrated sound hopefully) as they run around in hyrule field. Nintendo with their arrogance probably thought they did not need to compensate, gamers who are not used to these stuff will not appreciate it and should have included cross game chat for those who need it.

becasue they are incompetent, that is all

Don't buy that reasoning, "mute" buttons exist.

I wouldn't go that far but considering the original xbox had a seperate headset for voice communication only in 2001/2, (not sure about ps2) that's a pretty poor move by Nintendo, especially considering they have said they're going to try to bring back the core gamers... A casual gamer wouldn't use the headset anyway...

Not sure what your point is?  The main gripe was cross game chat not that there isn't a headset available considering there are already third party headsets for the Wii U.

Also, there was Wii Speak (Animal Crossing, MH3) and the headbanger headest on the Wii mainly used for FPS games.

I'm saying Ms did it 10 years ago wake up nintendo. As I said it sort of turns some hardcore players away too. Nintendo isn't catering for them. I'd love to in game or cross game chat on WiiU. I don't plan on buying one for atleast the first year of its release.

Honestly, I think it is because (while Sony and Microsoft are focused on competitive online multiplayer games) Nintendo is more focused on single player and local multiplayer gamers. Nintendo's big push for online services this generation seems to be designed to provide interaction between gamers even if they're playing at different times, and seems like a good enhancement to single player and local multiplayer games.

Cross game chat is (probably) a great way to invite a friend to play an online competitive multiplayer game with you, but that really isn't what Nintendo is focused on.

With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a way for Nintendo to add it in a later update if there is demand from developers and gamers.

But why not just add it? There's no negatives to having CGC. I have no idea what's involved in the process of implementing it but surely it's far from a big task?

Honestly, without knowing what Nintendo has implemented or how it was implemented I can't really say why it wasn't included ...

It could be an oversight, or it could be a feature that was low enough priority that it was pushed back until after the system launched, or it could be that the core principles of Nintendo's online service produced a design that made cross game chat difficult to implement.

Edit: In a way, asking why cross game chat isn't included is sort of like asking why split screen multiplayer isn't included in most HD console games. When I buy my nephews games I like to pick out games that they can play together, but most XBox 360 games are strictly single player or online multiplayer only.

I'm sure they can add it later.  Some one not buying the Wii U solely on missing cross game chat feature at launch probably wasn't going to buy it anyways.  Remember Wii added the sd card channel, and increased it to SDHC during the middle of the Wii's lifetime.  Also, the 3DS didn't even have an eshop at launch.  Having cross game chat on day 1 of launch isn't a big fucking deal.  It is just a small minority that acts like it is.  There is a thing called a system update.
