Ocarina of Time is purely the best game because of nostalgia. If you didn't play it when it was originally released, then you're not going to understand. Playing it for the first time on 3DS, there is no way it would live up to the hype.

Yeah, I was saying that to myself this morning. I'm a big fan of the Zelda series, but OoT is probably one of my least favorites. I never played it when it released on the N64 back when except for maybe a few minutes of tinkering. I got to it around 2003ish with the GC version. I played that for a bit and maybe got half way, and was not pleased with it due to other titles like Final Fantasy making my expectations go sky high. I then didn't get back to it until 2011 when I got into a phase of wanting to play the Ocarina of Time/Twilight Princess timeline. So I then completed both. I like it, but to me personally it's a "meh" in the series, but still not bad.

If I rated the ones i've played it would be: Wind Waker (Loved this one) = Skyward Sword (Playing this currently, and loving it) > Twilight Princess (Very fun) > Ocarina of Time.

Final Fantasty VII is my favourite game of all time and I first played it in 2009.

You're a special case, then lol.  My point is true for the vast majority of people, though.

I respectfully disagree. I'm sure nostalgia affects many video game fans, but it's unfair to explain away the opinions of thousands of people by claiming nostalgia.

I would bet that more than a couple of people on this site either just played it for the first time or recently replayed it, and think it's one of the best games of all time.

Give Majora's Mask a try, too.  It uses recycled models and the same engine from Ocarina, but it is by far the darkest and most difficult Zelda, with the possible exception of the NES original.

Oh I definitely want to. In recent years i've been holding out for a 3DS remake hoping they would do that. If not i'll definitely go back and play it on N64 or something.

The question is: can video games ever have a Citizen Kain? Gameplay is always evolving, getting better because of hardware. Movies don't have that problem. You can only find new ways to film your movies, but you're not restricted in the same way as games. OoT was such a leap, as was Mario 64, that they stood out in their time - just like the original Super Mario Bros. They could stand out because of the hardware they were on.

That's a massive difference.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Miyamoto says they're trying to decide whether to do a Majora's Mask remake for 3DS or make a sequel to Link to the Past.  Since he felt comfortable saying that publicly, it probably means both are in development.

Uncharted 2.

I don't think Ocarina of Time is the undisputed best game of all time. It is one of the best games of all time, but I don't think there is a game that the vast majority all agree is the best.

It's an interesting topic, but everyone has their favorites. Film as a medium was nearly perfected during the era of Citizen Kain. Video Games as a medium are still very much imperfect. Some games want to be movies, others don't have any story at all. What makes a video game good, is it gameplay or a great story with great actors? I personally believe gameplay trumps any attempt at narrative. When narrative is done well it does enhance the game, like Portal 1 and 2, but it's the gameplay that really makes the experience.

If I had to pick a game It would probably be one of the Super Mario Bros. games. They are fun, challenging and have good sound and music. They have just enough story to lay a foundation for the setting and the controls are just about the gold standard.

Which Mario game do you think it might be, kain?

See, that's the problem. Its so difficult to narrow it down. Do you go with the first one because it got so much right when nobody had even tried it before? Or the third one for expanding so much? Do you go with the forth for perfecting 2D Mario or NSM for refining it further? Do you go with the first to do 3D because it did what no other game had done or do you go with Galaxy 2 or 3D Land for refining 3D Mario gamplay?

Right now I'm enjoying Super Mario 3D Land, but the one I've played the most is probably Super Mario 3. Does nostolgia blind me? I don't think so because the old games are still fun to play today. Maybe that is what tells you if a game is truely great. Time shows what lasts and what doesn't.

I'm going to go with the Super Mario Bros. for the NES. It's the oldest and still fun and challenging today. Still be so much fun to play today as it was back in the day proves to me, at least, that it is a classic. Modern games, while very good, have yet to stand the test of time. In the future they may prove their worth, but right now we can only look back.
