Forums - Sales - Complete Sales Comparisons, Part 3

Part 2

In a CrazzyMan post, he wanted us to only discussing PS3 to PS2 sales, and told us to go make another thread to discuss other sales comparisons, so I decided I'd go ahead and put together a small (ie: LARGE) comparison of the 3 current-gen systems available on the market today.

This is part 3 of that comparison, in which I will compare 7th generation sales to 6th generation sales. I will use one full year for each console, 2007 for 7th generation consoles, and the year following the final release of 6th generation consoles in each region (different years for each system). Weekly sales, total sales (during the used timespan), and brief comparisons will be given. Links will be given as well. For size purposes, no graphs will actually be shown.

Direct Comparisons of Sales:
- This is harder to do, since x console sales between "date a" and "date b" to y console sales between the same period don't always mean much.
- However, I will try to do as fair as a comparison as possible, especially between consoles that have similar sales (i.e. PS2, Wii)
- I will note some releases of major games for each console when I compare it to another

Generation Sales (Weekly, Full Year)

7th Generation Console Sales

Per Week: Starting 1/1/07; ending 12/31/07

2007 Total Sales

Wii

PS3

X360

Total

16,477,446

7,742,389

8,380,739

Conclusions:
- Sales seem pretty stable throughout the entire year (besides the obvious Christmas sales)
- Things to note:
- The jump for the PS3 in March is the Europe launch
- It's hard to say anything of any significance for the Wii, since it was very supply constrained
- Xbox360 saw a boost due to the release of Halo 3, and didn't return to normal levels because of the start of the Christmas season

6th Generation Console Sales
- Unfortunately, with massive differences in release dates (the difference between the PS2s Japan release date and the GameCubes Europe release is 2 full years), it's hard to do direct weekly sales in any given year. As such, I'll be doing first year sales for each console after they had been released in all territories.

PS2 Sales Per Week: Starting 11/20/00; ending 11/19/01

PS2 Total Sales (same period as graph)

PS2

Xbox Sales Per Week: Starting 3/11/02; ending 3/10/03

Xbox Total Sales (same period as graph)

Conclusions:
- Besides PS2, the GameCube and Xbox both had very stable sales, besides holiday sales
- The PS2 was supply constrained during some (most?) of 2001
- Other boosts for the PS2 include the releases of these games:
- Gran Turismo 3: Japan- 4/28/01; NA- 7/10/01; Others- 9/20/01
- Final Fantasy X: Japan- 7/19/01
- Grand Theft Auto 3: NA- 10/22/01; Others- 10/26/01
