I'm planning on enlisting in the Air Force so I wanted to see what fellow members and current or former military people feel about their service. I am at the beginning of the process, I turned in my papers last week and was scheduled to take the ASVAB today but it was canceled.

air force would be a good experience. Ad some discipline while also opening up some great career opportunities. If you become a pilot, you could move on afterwords into a great paying job flying commercial jets.

If you don't have any job prospects, career goals, or college at the moment, why not?

I was going to join the Air Force and got to where I was about to schedule my ASVAB and decided that I wanted to stay in school. I also have a couple politically motivated reasons I decided not to join...

score past a 35 so you can do what you want.

only 1.1% are pilots. chances of seeing war are 1 and infinity. i say go for it. statistically, you're safer in the airforce then at home.

My number one reason for joining is to get into a career field so I can bring it back with me in civilian life. I bought an ASVAB study guide so that has been my priority. I scored very well on the practice test and I'm good at SAT type tests, so I'm confident I can score well enough for the jobs I'm looking to join.

If you are going to join the military, the Air Force is the one to join. Just know that basic training is probably going to be the hardest thing you do in your life. You're going to be yelled at, deprived of sleep, not allowed to communicate with your family, etc. You will feel like you've gone to hell. I cannot stress to you how much you will regret your decision.

Somewhere near the end of your BMT, you'll realize that you've changed. You'll have a different set of values, a new level of confidence, and an almost instant bond with people that have been through what you've been through. It's a good decision but you'll question it for a while. From basic training, your life could move in a million different directions. Your ASVAB score will be key in determining if you're the guy in the tower running air-traffic control or if you're the guy jumping out of planes in hostile environments (Combat control/ Para rescue). And you will have signed a contract. Once you're there, there is almost no turning back.

Be sure it's what you want before you commit. I think it's a good choice but you have to live that life. You have to go through it, not me.

Honestly, if you want a career, go Navy.

I have a friend that got certified to work on a reactor on a nuclear sub. He did his tours, and did very well at his job.

Once he got out, he got hired on as a reactor technician at a major nuclear power plant. He's making somewhere between $200,000 and $300,000 USD, and he's about 25-26 years old.

I am sure you can get a great career from being in the air force, but it won't be from being a pilot, honestly. There are too many people in the commercial sector. You'd be better off with helicopters (but thats Army and Marines), or working on becoming an astronaut.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I think the military is a good idea if you plan to pursue things After college. Just to pay for college is ok too but for the best bang for your buck, say if you want to go to medical school. After college (u have some debt); then if you get into medical school then apply for the military.

What's cool is that, while you are in medical school; you only go to training like once a year. And then you get a stipend for all 4 years to pay for living expense and food AND they pay for all 4 years of med school (200-250k). During residency u have the choice of a civilian vs military match and then you have to then serve 4 years in the military as a doctor afterward. Your wage in those 4 years will not be as good as some of your newly grad civilian friends but it's probably worth it, looking back at hindsight myself.

This is the only way that I know, that you will graduate medical school with a rank higher than most of your supervisor while u were in school without going through some tough training, and it's the only way i know that you are now a military officer (rank-wise) and never have to fire a gun on the battlefield (just in practice mdoe).

That's great that you are wanting to serve your country and join the Air Force. I'm currently an Air Force recruiter in California. I've been in 12 years and love it. Just understand that ALOT of people are trying to join right now. The Air Force has more highly qualified people wanting to join then we have spots available. Air Force recruiters are looking for quality not quantity. If your qualified and score well you should be good to go. Good luck!

4 percent are pilots
