I play a ton of sports and fighting games actually and sometimes they do win GOTY. You're selection of those specific genres seem rather arbitrary though. Why sport and fighing games? Why not RPGs, Platformers, Puzzle Games, Shooters, Music games? You coudl have just as easily chosen anyone of those but you went with those two.

In which year did a Sports game won a GOTY? Or was even nominated? those other categories are frequently at the GOTYs.

I don't play fighters or sports games but from what I've played my top 6 games of 2011 is:

1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
2. Gears of War 3
3. Resistance 3
4. LittleBigPlanet 2
5. Forza Motorsport 4
6. Killzone 3

For me 2011 was a terrible year, although I have yet to play Batman: Arkham City or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim which both seem amazing and will definitely have a place on my list. I was going to give Infamous 2 a chance but I found the first game to be extremely boring so I passed on the sequel, might still buy it when it's around £5. Also I'm still interested in trying L.A. Noire and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings which look interesting.

I'm not forgetting about Uncharted 3, I played it and thought it was absolutely mediocre, such a huge disappointment and I'm not even an Uncharted fan in the slightest, UC1 = Mediocre, UC2 = Good, UC3 Mediocre. I really hope they ditch the series by next generation, it's not like the games are huge sellers anyway since they depend so heavily on bundles to pass the 4.5m or so mark and they have a very small fan-base. Go ahead and look for the biggest UC fan-pages on Facebook then look at GoW, GT and LBP which all dwarf UC.

I'm starting to deviate from the OP so just ignore me, I'm just bitter still that I wasted money on a rubbish game.

LBP 2 most certainly did release in 2011.  I bought it as soon as it came out at the start of the last year.

And as such, I choose it as my game of the year for 2011!

(Also, I don't think I played any sports or fighting titles that released last year.  I don't really play those genres at all, unless they're arcadey sports titles like Tony Hawk or SSX!)

Dark Souls, nothing comes even close for my personal goty.

...well maybe Forza Motorsport 4 but it's just uncomparable, too different.
