Forums - Gaming - Why is Nintendo always portrayed as the company deemed to fail?

Glad I'm not seeing that many doomed articles about Nintendo....but now we have the Sony doomed articles which also annoys me.

I'm more annoyed at Doom articles before a system is released.  Any doom articles on a system after its realesed are fine with me.  We can easily look at sales ourselves and see if we believe the article or not.

BUT an article before a system is released just feels someone trying to make something fail, before even giving it a chance.  Just screams fanboyism.

For those who wanted to know, I looked at all the annual reports of Nintendo since the release of Wii and the total profits derived from the 7th gen since '06 is 8.5 Billion US $ o_O

Even though the N64 and Gamecube didn't do so well I'm sure they still made money.  I'm pretty sure that the only gaming device that Nintendo lost money on was the Virtual Boy and it died a very quick death so Nintendo didn't pump a lot of unecessary money into to keep it going or trying to save it.

It's called paranoia. There are far more Sony doom articles. They've been going strong since 2006. I think the few Nintendo related articles can be ascribed to the fact Nintendo posted its first loss since forever recently, so that probably got the ball rolling.

I'm just gonna refer you to play4fun's response: he nailed it!

"Sony doom articles started when...Sony started to screw up. The PS3 started off as a disaster, they had financial troubles in the company, the Vita is currently doing badly. People jumped on that.

Meanwhile, even when Nintendo was having great success with Wii, they were consistently proclaimed to be doomed.

Things seem to have shifted to Sony now because of Vita and MS, as usual, remains immune to The Doom."

Sony-Doom and Nintendo-Doom are two very different beasts ...

Sony-Doom is based (primarily) on the corporate finances of Sony along with the poor sales of the PS-Vita and involves doubts about whether Sony learned their lesson with the PS3 and/or whether they can adapt to function using a strategy that doesn't involve dramatic up-front losses. In other words, while you may disagree with the analysis, Sony-Doom is based on extrapolation of problems Sony currently is having; and is ultimately based in reality.

Nintendo-Doom is based (primarily) on flawed assumptions surrounding moronic stereotypes, and a significant effort is spent ignoring reality. Nintendo's strong (overall) finances, the solid sales of the 3DS, decent interest in the Wii U, the explosion of multi-console ownership in the previous generation (because people buy a system that offers unique gaming experiences not necessarily the best graphics), and etc.

Sony doom articles would go away if Sony fixed some of their underlying problems and saw success in general, but no amount of success will ever eliminate Nintendo doom articles. Essentially, after (about) 2009 the "Sony Doom" dried up until Sony released the PS-Vita because the PS3 and PSP were selling far better; but even when Nintendo was selling the Wii and Nintendo DS at record pace people were writing about how their failure was right around the corner.

I love your well thought out, analytic posts!! It seems like you're always nailing it

The Nintendoom began during the N64 era, it's nothing new. It was their back-to-back-to back (including Virtual Boy) sales failures that put great doubt on Nintendo's ability to stay in the game. That's what's always in the back of peoples' minds, it's the knowledge that at any point Nintendo is capable of making huge mistakes. Yet at the same time by so many others, Nintendo is often thought of as the one company that will be making games longer than anyone else. There's a balance to all of this, and I'm not sure that the OP has really given proper perspective on the issue.

8.5 billion? That is awesome! That is almost 1.5x of Microsoft's quarterly profits! Unbelievable!

And how much did MS and Sony make in gaming during the same period? They didn't do nearly as well. Fact. They were left in the dust.

Thats true I am mostly a sony fan lol but I always supported and brought Nintendo's handhelds mainly because they get some decent Rpgs. Brought a Vita over the 3ds this time round though :P

And that's why you see all of these doom articles =) we Nintendo fans have suffered through this the past few generations ;) you get used to it!
