It's far from doomed. The PS3 has the second best sales rate of the generation despite a very bad launch. If that launch did not hurt the Playstation brand in the long run then I'd say it's pretty healthy.

I'd say it very much did hurt the brand.   PS3 has picked up its sales but it's nothing like the PS2.  And Vita, well, what more can be said about that.

Part of the problem is the brand was hurt.    The Playstation brand today is not the Playstation brand of 2006.    When Sony admits that they are having trouble getting 3rd parties to support one of their consoles, that's a brand with some hurt going on.

Doomed?  No.
Healthy?  No.
Hurt?  Yes.

If people think the Playstation brand is in trouble in any way I feel bad for them. They are so misinformed.
Sure there is no AAA game this holiday(last year we had Uncharted) but there are a variety of great games such LBP Karting and PS All-Stars along with the usual 3rd party juggernauts. Not having a AAA title this holiday could actually be a smart move by Sony. It strengthens their relationship with 3rd parties which is what they should be doing now that a transition into next-gen is starting.

lol your so adorable.

1st: Sony financials/PS3 losses in its first few years/PS2 sales compared to PS3........its only facts. You feel bad for people paying attention to the real world. Hows that viel look over your eyes?

2nd: Did I just read a PS fan justify having no big guns this year? Downplaying your consoles biggest strengths? wow. Nevermind the big 3rd party games like COD and AC3 will be bought more on 360.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

It aint doomed. Thats coming from me.

But I will say going into next gen they are in the worst position of the 3. Doesnt mean they wont be a success in their own right, but Nintendo and MS at this point have a edge on them.

Why would Microsoft have an edge?  They had the lowest sales rate of the generation and the lowest installed base despite launching a year before the others.  Yes, they've done very well taking market share in North America and their stategy of buying DLC seems effective, but the Xbox brand hasn't caught on world-wide.  I think they might be more at risk of losing ground.  They have to come out strong.  Nintendo and Playstation, however, have proven they can survive awful starts as brands.

Regardless, a new generation is anyone's game.  We never know what's going to happen.

What MS has a benefit in is they aren't going to be hampered by the Yen to wester currency exchange rate like Nintendo and Sony are.  That will give them a benefit either in terms of initial profits or making a more powerful console at the same price.

They've also done far better to help the Xbox brand over this generation than Sony has.

I agree that it's anyone's game but MS will have a financial edge because of the changes in the currency exchange rate.

It's the number one selling console, beating both of it's major competitors every week in sales. No doom lol.

I do love the fanboys who cant admit that the PS3 is number one, people who quote US sales...never global numbers.

Dumb topic, feeding into delusions.

If Sony fails in the near future and I'm left with either Xbox or Nintendo to choose, I'll probably try out Nintendo. I had the NES and enjoyed Metroid, Zelda, Megaman, and Metal Gear. The Wii and N64 failed to grab my attention.

Would I play Metroid and Zelda games now? No, but hopefully they would fill the HD JRPG segment that Sony would leave behind.

What HD JRPGs? The HD consoles have like shit for JRPGs. Not even close to being comparable to the great lineup of JRPGs that appeared on previous PlayStation consoles. Not to mention, if you're relying on the PS3 for your JRPG fix, you're missing out on two of the best JRPGs of this generation: Lost Odyssey and Xenoblade.

So bleeding billions this last 6 years means all is fine with the PlayStation brand. You guys are starting to sound as misguided as Sega fans were towards the end. If drastic changes aren't made in strategy then yes they are in trouble, we will know more when the PS4 is released though.

I agree APM...i dont think its only Sony that is doomed but pretty much the entire dedicated console gaming industry. Selling expensive consoles and games is simply not working for anyone. Ive posted a lot about how i feel about the topic so wont go into it here again. But i feel a new strategy is needed for console makers if they want to stay relevant to consumers.

You could be right, I think that's why Microsoft are so eagerly chasing subscription based charges testing the water.  Perhaps PSN plus is a similar research project by Sony.

Drastic changes have been made, I gave examples and they were major points in the article. Did you even read it?
