Yankee Group Director - no one is playing games on Wii

“Yes, the platform is wildly selling, but no one is playing games on it. You really have to question what kind of legs [Wii] will have when it sells out the Nintendo market.” - Yankee Group Director Mike Goodman

Mr. Goodman also says that third parties will be leaving the Wii sooner than later. I know a lot of you guys complain that you have nothing to play on the Wii. Are your standards too high, are there too many games of a genre that you don’t like, or are third parties doing a bad job with creating quality titles?

Okay, first of all, I have to get this off my chest:

ROFFLE!

It seems like the more sales Wii smashes, the angrier people get. There's a new stereotype every 5 million, and none of them make sense. With impressive holiday hardware and software sales, how can you even try to present this? Where would you begin? Why the HELL are people buying all these Wii's and hundreds of thousands of pieces of software if they have no intention of actually playing them. And my biggest question: how do you even gauge how much people are playing games on the console in the first place? Are there hidden camera's in Wii's activated through Connect24 that record and display to Nintendo? And if so why would they share that info with the likes of you?

Really, you can't make sense out of nonsense.

My favorite thing about the article though is the fanboyish, almost depths-of-VGC claims that third parties are going to leave the Wii. I'm sorry, what? Which third parties? People complain that there are no third parties but then say that they're going to start leaving the Wii, if they're not there yet how can they leave? And the third parties that are there, why would they leave? The ones that put forth an effort were rewarded (Capcom), the ones that put forth even half-assed efforts are making profits too (EA). The Wii is a goldmine that has hardly even been tapped yet by the industry, exactly what is supposed to cause this imaginary mass exodus?

From the article:

Sooner, rather than later, third-party publishers are going to abandon it, Goodman predicted, or least throw resources toward other platforms as well.

Yes. Yes. Soon, they will learn that they should stop spending all their developmental resources making Wii games, and will finally put real effort, development time and marketing dollars into PS3/360 games.

Yes indeed, we're not playing games, we use our Wiis for the endless multimedia possibilities they offer.

And as stated by Rol and I, the Nintendo fans pool is running dry, thus the Wii will stop selling soon, confirming it's reputation as a fad.

I for one certainly didn't buy my Wii to play games. I just like to have it there so I can look at the pretty blue light. Yes, it must be true, "no one is playing games on the Wii".

Smash Bros: 2363-5325-6342

Poll stated 70% of japanese Wii owners didn't play it on a regular basis.

NOTE: THIS WAS BEFORE CHRISTMAS.(but im sure they will play for a few months and stop again)

NOTE: DON'T ASK FOR PS3 OR 360 NUMBERS AS THE SITE ONLY DID IT FOR THE WII(wish they did it for all consoles for comparison sake)

First, the poll was by admission informal and not scientific. Second, I love it. So they'll play it for a few more months, then stop again?

And then another game will come out, and then play that for a few months, and then stop again. Isn't that... how games work? You buy a game, you play it for a while, then you stop until you buy another game. Shocking.

The Wii actually has a significantly higher attach rate in Japan than the PS3 does, and the gap is widening, not shrinking. Before the holiday, the attach rates were about 2.05/2.60 PS3/Wii, and now it's 1.95/2.9 PS3/Wii. The Wii's attach rate is 50% higher now.

It's like people want the Wii to fail, and will insist things are true even when they clearly are not. People don't play Wii games in Japan! And yet, the average Wii owner buys more Wii games than a PS3 owner buys PS3 games (for the record, 360's attach rate is higher). In America, the Wii is a fad! And yet, the Wii sold more software in the critical December holiday month than the 360 or PS3 did, despite having a smaller user base than the 360.

And finally, the Wii hardware will stop selling! And yet, month after month, week after week, there is absolutely no sign of this, there is no hint whatsoever that the Wii will not continue as all dominant consoles have -- to keep on selling for 5-6 years until it is replaced by its successor.

I use my Wii for its amazing calender functionality. Definitely not for gaming.

True but not many people are playing Mass Effect, MP3, or Heavenly Sword a 4th or 5th time. Luckily, there are always games that are fun to play no matter what (see GH3, RB, any decent multiplayer FPS, etc..).

To Each Man, Responsibility

I just bought my wii just for the box, not for gaming
