Forums - Nintendo - NPD states that Wii software outsells 360 software in December

Heh, that's a good one, Griffin. The Wii hardly had the "worst year" of the three consoles; quite otherwise. As noted, it managed to outdo both 360 and PS3 worldwide software-wise. In the US, it managed only slightly less than the 360 software-wise (37.5mil vs. 48mil), and totally blew the PS3's 15.2mil away. In Japan, it's completely trumped 360 and PS3 (at 11.9mil, while those two got 1.4mil and 3mil, respectively). It's harder to track how the systems did in Europe, but it's not hard to spot the trend: pretty much every week, the Wii's shown selling more software than the 360 or PS3.

If you're going solely by attach rates (which, incidentally, are useless save to make yourself feel better), then yes, the Wii is trailing a bit. But even there, it's not trailing by much.

Yeah about the japanese developers making software for the 360, im sure your aware that if it wasnt for ms giving blank checks to the developers then we wouldnt have blue dragon, lost odyssey, dead rising and the timed exclustivity of eternal sonata and ace combat six, ninja gaiden 2, and the tri ace game with SE. The point im getting at is that ms bribes companies, meaning the companies already know they are going to get money/ wont lose because microsft paid for everyhting. Not that theres anything wrong with that but your 360 in japan analogy was weak, similiar to my original argument.

Still i dont see whats so disagreeable with the idea that not alot of third party ''hardcore'' games will come to the wii. Game divisions will hire a new team to make casual games catered to the wii fanbase and bask in profits. Most of the hardcore games i predcirt will come from nintendo themselves.

So where would they make them for then. The Japanese Developers that is? PS3 software sales have been even worse. I mean... i guess the DS.

The real point is. This thread is about NPD... and software sales in North America.  Making any talk about Japanese sales. (which are still the best for any console) off topic.

Also, take into consideration that NPD does not count WiiSports as VGChartz does; big win for the Wii!

If a Japanese developer chooses to make a home console game (Big if considering DS games are all that sell), the Wii still does have the best 3rd party game sales in Japan... add that to by far the cheapest development costs and the vast majority of Japanese 3rd party home console games will come to the Wii.  Hell, the majority already are comming to the Wii.  Check out the release lists of Namco, Sega, and Capcom sometime...

Wow apparently also, MS forgot about this little part in their PR spin haha.

They sold less software... but the consumers spent more revenue on it!  (I also think that number included add ons.. and probably live membership knowing sneaky MS.)

MS Spin: "We're beating PS3! Definitely beating PS3!!! Marketshare larger than the PS3! Yes, it's true, we sold more than the PS3! In conclusion we beat the PS3!!!"

Actually MS didn't focus on December at all, instead giving revenues for all of 2007.

Seeing as how most 3rd party games havent done so hot (No more heroes, The SE chocobo game, elbits, zak and wiki), the fact that mario galaxy in japan has yet to sell 1 million copies, Im somewhat convinced that the developers will still create games for the wii but i doubt we'll see alot more "hardcore" games. I think developers may be somewhat confused on exactly what the wii fanbase wants and are probaly intimitiated by nintendos 1st party success. I think most developers will keep the "hardcore" games on the ps3/360 and will have a team within their gaming division that makes casual games. Just a theory please dont flame me.

What you should realise is that developers won´t have a choice but to make hardcore games for Wii. These companies´business is making games.

The last gen they could afford to leave Gamecube because it only represented a small part of the market. Wii is speeding towards 50% marketshare. These developers simply can´t afford to ignore such a large part of the market.

I still don´t believe that the majority of Wii owners are people who never before played any game. I believe that the demographic of Wii consist mostly of 1. Harcore Nintendo fans, 2. Hardcore gamers (real hardcore gamers that have all consoles) 3. people who left Nintendo after the SNES-N64 are returning to their old brand.

Sure there are people that like Carnival Games, but those games are still outsold by Zelda, SMG, RE4 etc.  which proves the userbase likes more mature games. The thing is that the traditional Nintendo fan is spoiled with the incredible quality of Nintendo games.

Conclusion is that 3rd parties should make better games.
