Forums - Nintendo - NPD states that Wii software outsells 360 software in December

http://wii.ign.com/articles/846/846606p1.html

Thanks to Matt Cassamina at IGN, who has full NPD information, we now know that NPD calculates that the Wii software total outsold the 360 software total in December.

I'm not remotely suggesting the typical "change the figures Ioi!" banter (although clearly some games such as CoD4 360 and Wii Play will need drastic re-arrangement). What I am suggesting is that Wii software has now established itself; I have pointed out several times over the last couple months that the Wii's software totals worldwide have more than competed with 360 software, and that the Wii was not, in fact, suffering from a user base that avoids software purchases.

Now, it appears that NPD is confirming and even surpassing my estimations -- the Wii managed to sell more software than the 360 in America last month, despite having 20% less units in the region. In the busiest month of the year by far. Even competing (say, within 25% of the 360's software total, with 20% less hardware sold, would be in line with 360 totals) would have been adequate to prove my point, but it not only competed, but bested.

I'm sure there will be months in the future where the 360 software will outsell Wii software -- I expect GTA IV releasing in April (we believe) will be another example of that -- but as a general rule, I'm beginning to feel quite confident in saying that the Wii is not a software midget that will need some astronomical hardware LTD in order to match the 360's software totals.

+1 for wii, bringing it toooo.....

Seeing as how most 3rd party games havent done so hot (No more heroes, The SE chocobo game, elbits, zak and wiki), the fact that mario galaxy in japan has yet to sell 1 million copies, Im somewhat convinced that the developers will still create games for the wii but i doubt we'll see alot more "hardcore" games. I think developers may be somewhat confused on exactly what the wii fanbase wants and are probaly intimitiated by nintendos 1st party success. I think most developers will keep the "hardcore" games on the ps3/360 and will have a team within their gaming division that makes casual games. Just a theory please dont flame me.

No More heroes... not released in the US. Also a Suda 51 game. These don't sell.

Chocobo Game... not in the US.

Zak and Wiki... so unsuccessful a sequel is planned.

Elebits... actually hit there expectations i believe. It wasn't too expensive from the looks of italthough fun it's a cheap game.

Not seeing your point. In relation to the NPD numbers.  Considering 360's software sales in japan... and they still get software made for them.  Really not seeing your point.

The true genius of Wii games is that the budgets required to produce them allows many Wii games to sell sub-200,000 and still draw a profit. Also, I'm not surprised that the Wii is doing better than a lot have predicted. There are, quite frankly, a lot of good Wii games already. And it's only been a little over a year since the system launched.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Yeah about the japanese developers making software for the 360, im sure your aware that if it wasnt for ms giving blank checks to the developers then we wouldnt have blue dragon, lost odyssey, dead rising and the timed exclustivity of eternal sonata and ace combat six, ninja gaiden 2, and the tri ace game with SE. The point im getting at is that ms bribes companies, meaning the companies already know they are going to get money/ wont lose because microsft paid for everyhting. Not that theres anything wrong with that but your 360 in japan analogy was weak, similiar to my original argument.

Still i dont see whats so disagreeable with the idea that not alot of third party ''hardcore'' games will come to the wii. Game divisions will hire a new team to make casual games catered to the wii fanbase and bask in profits. Most of the hardcore games i predcirt will come from nintendo themselves.

Wii games undertraked here...intresting

Point for the Wii.

With the wii having the worst year for games in 07 it is very surprising that they were first in december. But the fact that the wii is seen more as a kids toy it makes sense that parents would buy it for their kids over the 360/PS3, plus most parents won't know what games they will want so they buy anything with mario in it.

Good news for the Big N in terms of developers, least it might get some more love from experienced teams now other than it's own personal R&D.
