Sonys old method counted a PS2 that had been sent as a replacement for a faulty machine, of which there were many... if they had only counted sales to retail like they did before PS2 [they changed in 2000] and like they do now, then Sonys LTD numbers would be much lower.
You can actually see the difference in old fiscals, I believe in the 2001 report they gave numbers for 99-00 [as a comparison] which showed different numbers to the 99 report which used sales to "customer" [by which they mean retail]
