Forums - Sony - Playstation All-stars Battle Royale: full roster revealed!

In the PS1 era, Sony came into the market with the same idea that Sega and Nintendo had been operating under: a brand had to be built around a face, and that face had to have power. Crash was an answer to Mario, and Solid Snake was reframed in a way to overshadow James Bond (as ridiculous as it sounds now, Goldeneye vs. MGS arguments weren't that uncommon back in '98, just because the character filled similar niches). Cloud was held up opposite to Link. That was the image of Playstation, as the fans defined it to fans of other consoles. These faces are old and powerful symbols.

While I can completely understand why you'd say that, everything I've ever read about the Playstation brand has suggested something completely opposite.

Sony came to the market wanting to distinguish from Nintendo/Sega and as such they didn't want a mascot for the Playstation.  The original mascots for the system were Polygon man, quickly replaced by Sofia from Battle Arena Toshinden.  That's what Sony were pushing.

Eventually, you know, things changed.  Sony signed exclusive publishing deals with Universal for Crash and Spyro, Lara Croft gravitated her way towards stardom, Solid Snake returned in a blaze of glory etc.  And all of these characters, to some extent, became mascots for the Playstation.  Eventually Sony grew to accept this (i.e. the infamous Crash Bandicoot advert), but they never seemed too fussed about creating their own 'official' mascot.

And that's become exactly their undoing now.  Their brand got built around multiple different faces during the early days, but Sony's interest in having a mascot was never more than a passing marketing opportunity here or there.  In making a mascot brawler they need that kind of brand recognition that's seemingly become impossible to get access to again due to the fact that none of it was ever owned by Sony.  They've made progress since the PS2 with Kratos, Drake, Sackboy, Ratchet etc. but they're all relatively new and don't share the same nostalgia levels that Crash, Lara or Snake would.

Further comparisons to Smash brothers.

Good Cole and Evil Cole are the Doctor Mario and Mario of Smash.

Lay off the crack.

how is what he said wrong?

if its fair to call good cole and evil cole clones then surely for characters that share even more similar move sets in smash the same must apply

characters such as : link - toon link, fox - falco, falcon - ganondarf,  mario - doctor mario, etc

given your prior comments to aldro i'm surprised to see you dismiss a point out of hand like that instead of analysing it a bit first

Sorry there, I was thinking he was talking in terms of personality and not move set. Hence....my "wtf" comment.

Sony's First party line up has always been about diversity, that has been followed through with this title. It doesn't help that Sony's biggest exclusive franchise has no characters at all (GT).

C'mon, if Sega did it, why Sony don't?

LOL XD

That's a pretty cool idea, but then you hit another problem with the lack of an iconic car in GT xD

Calsonic Skyline (or GTR).

Edit - Reasons:

The Nissan Skyline/GTR is the car with most versions in each GT game.

Race cars are cooler than road cars.

Calsonic is an historic Nissan sponsor, their logos are in other cars like the R92CP or the R390.

JGTC cars have been in GT since GT2.

Different sponsors have come and gone with the years, but in each GT game since GT2 there have always been a Calsonic Skyline or GTR.

Even some of the R-modded Skylines in GT1 had the Calsonic colors (but not the actual Calsonic logo due to licenses).

Let hope this is successful as Super Smash Brawl :)

I still stay awake at night thinking how awesome it would be to have cloud in PSASBR, Iv already pre ordered it and still exicted to play it but I just can't help but feel disappointed.

I think the roster is fine.... I also wouldn't count on any hidden 3rd party characters. DLC maybe, but not hidden..... the various copy rights would be visible at the beginning of the game other wise.

no solid snake.
