Sony's First party line up has always been about diversity, that has been followed through with this title. It doesn't help that Sony's biggest exclusive franchise has no characters at all (GT).

That's a pretty cool idea, but then you hit another problem with the lack of an iconic car in GT xD

Calsonic Skyline (or GTR).

Edit - Reasons:

The Nissan Skyline/GTR is the car with most versions in each GT game.

Race cars are cooler than road cars.

Calsonic is an historic Nissan sponsor, their logos are in other cars like the R92CP or the R390.

JGTC cars have been in GT since GT2.

Different sponsors have come and gone with the years, but in each GT game since GT2 there have always been a Calsonic Skyline or GTR.

Even some of the R-modded Skylines in GT1 had the Calsonic colors (but not the actual Calsonic logo due to licenses).
