Forums - General - Golfweek fires editor over racial cover

Golfweek Magazine, as part of a package of stories on the controversy involving Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman's comment that players should "lynch [Tiger Woods] in a back alley," used the image of a noose on the cover of its Jan. 19 issue.

That decision has added fuel to a flap which has seen Tilghman suspended for two weeks from her anchoring duties. Woods' agent said he considers Tilghman's remark a "non-issue."

That's tolerance at it's most conservative... Jeez.

It's sad stuff like this is still said. You would think the U.S. would be past this, but unfortunately, it hasn't. I used to live in the South and saw this often, but now, I rarely see it. It's a relief to be a minority here without having to watch your back 24-7.

I think firing the editor is a bit much. However, why did they have to keep this discussion going? The poor announcer slipped and said something awful. I'm sure she feels miserable about it. Tiger's agent said it was no big deal. Why couldn't they just let the problem go away?

You don't *slip* and make a racially charge comment. It's there all along. And folks that choose that route deserve to be canned - and sued, in my opinion. There is absolutely no need or place for this kind of foolishness.

Agreed. That kind of quote can't even be taken 'out of context' like they usually claim.

Tiger is always going to downplay something like this. The joke that Fuzzy Zoeller made was much worse than this (back in 1998) and Tiger shrugged it off. The cover is not in good taste regardless of whether Tiger is going to be upset about. Kelley Tilghman made an unfortunate choice of words but the editor of the magazine made a calculated attempt to highlight the controversy using an inflammatory image.

@ Game_boy

You are correct. Joking is one thing - but doing that was out of bounds. I am a minority, and I will stop folks in mid conversation and tell them 'I don't play that.' Don't come to me with racial jokes and the like. I don't tolerate that crap one bit ...

What's going on, phkusumot? Yeah, Tiger has said he's Cablasian, but most folks consider him Black. He may laugh it off, but I would be offended as the devil. It's tasteless, as you stated, and uncalled for. I know Kelley wasn't wishing him ill-will - she said they're friends - but some things should be kept in private.

It's best to keep quiet and let folks think you are stupid than opening your pie hole and confirming it.

I agree with you. Personally I wish Tiger were more like Muhammad Ali in his advocacy.
