Forums - Sony - The iPhone 5 camera is powered by a Sony sensor.

It’s not a big surprise: Sony is very competitive with image sensors these days, and former Sony CEO Howard Stringer let slip earlier this year that Sony was supplying camera technology to Apple.

But the iPhone 5 has two cameras, of course. The lesser one, a front-facing camera for videoconferencing software such as Microsoft’s Skype or Apple’s Facetime, uses a sensor from Sony competitor Omnivision, ChipWorks found.

Sony is saved.

Hmmm very interesting. Would sony be getting any substantial income from this at all though?

I'd assume Apple already paid? not sure.

Sony made the sensor for the 4S as well.

They are also supplying the battery while Samsung did for the 4S. Apple have also sourced the memory from another company for the 5, while Samsung supplied it for the 4S. Legal battles can be costly in more than one way.

Even if they are making profit of 3$ per iPhone 4s and 5 sensor, thats close to 1 billion $ profit. 4S already have sold over 100 million if im not wrong.

So Sony now is also making battery for iPhone 5?

It was not until Sony supplied camera sensor in 4S i would say that Apple took the camera's seriously in Iphones. The camera was iphone 4 was very nice but competitors still had better ones out. This one in the new phone seems to improve on few things but am looking forward to see how it fares against the Lumia 920.

The main 8mp camera is from Sony aswel.

Its not only iPhone that gets Sony censors, Galaxy S3 has Sony CMOS too.

Sony knows how to make some cash apparently, but how much revenue will this generate for them?
