Forums - Nintendo - Does the WiiU have memory dedicated to the GPU? Or is the 2GB for CPU OS and GPU?

Will the WiiU have ram dedicated to the GPU?

It won't have GPU ram 7 43.75%

it will have less then 256mb 1 6.25%

it will have 256mb 1 6.25%

it will have 512mb 2 12.50%

It will have 1gb 1 6.25%

It will have more than 1gb 1 6.25%

Thou shalt herald me the ... 3 18.75%

i think the eDram quantity was stated by IBM an his webpage
they said it tripled the eDram used until now, probably 32MB

the WiiU has a GPGPU instead of a separate CPU, GPU, so the 1GB of main RAM will be used for CPU functions and GPU functions, by the GPGPU, which is a GPU acting as a CPU and a GPU at the same time......got it?

the remaining 1GB its still a mystery

Saying it is a GPGPU doesn't mean that it is an APU ... more likely it means that the GPU is based on a modern architecture that has demonstrated support for (something like) CUDA.

I would suspect that the 2GB total memory is shared by the CPU and GPU but that both processors would have embedded memory and on the CPU that would act as a L3 cache and memory on the GPU would represent the screen buffers and a texture cache. As a guess I would say that the CPU probably has 16MB to 32MB of embedded memory while the GPU has 32MB to 64MB of embedded memory.

I'm guessing closer to 12 MB to 16 MB on the CPU depending on the number of cores (3 or 4).

I don't know either way to be honest, just thinking what the most likely range without having more details ...

No way does the CPU have that much cache. It's so expensive on die area that it's really for server chips.

1GB is for OS/Apps and that level of stuff right now, but as it begins to finalize, Nintendo will reduce that limitation. (Sony did the same thing with PS3, started high for OS and then cut that quite a bit a couple years later)
1GB is for Games, meaning all memory is 1GB shared.
32MB eDRAM is also available for games and is really a lot of eDRAM.

That is plenty of very fast high-end memory for a dedicated console.

Some of you really need to read the OP and 2nd post in that thread.

Power7 has 4 MB per core so thats why I'm suggesting 12 MB to 16 MB.

Soleron, who knows what they've actually removed to make this a viable game console CPU but remember that this is eDRAM, not SRAM as most caches use.
