Forums - Nintendo - Does the WiiU have memory dedicated to the GPU? Or is the 2GB for CPU OS and GPU?

Will the WiiU have ram dedicated to the GPU?

It won't have GPU ram 7 43.75%

it will have less then 256mb 1 6.25%

it will have 256mb 1 6.25%

it will have 512mb 2 12.50%

It will have 1gb 1 6.25%

It will have more than 1gb 1 6.25%

Thou shalt herald me the ... 3 18.75%

So the PS3 has 256mb of ram and 256 of video ram and no eDRAM.  The 360 has 512 all purpose ram that can be shared between cpu and gpu + 10mb of eDRAM.

But what about the WiiU?  It has 2gb of ram of which 1 for games (cpu?) and 1gb for the OS (at least at launch).

We know it has eDRAM but not really how much of it.

But what about the WiiUs  GPU? Does it have dedicated VRAM?

If yes how much will or should it have? 256mb? 512mb? 1gb?

please discuss.

I would like to know this too, as well as the power of it's processor, I guess we'll have to wait till launch to get all the details.

Maybe 512mb of VRAM?

i think the eDram quantity was stated by IBM an his webpage
they said it tripled the eDram used until now, probably 32MB

the WiiU has a GPGPU instead of a separate CPU, GPU, so the 1GB of main RAM will be used for CPU functions and GPU functions, by the GPGPU, which is a GPU acting as a CPU and a GPU at the same time......got it?

the remaining 1GB its still a mystery

Saying it is a GPGPU doesn't mean that it is an APU ... more likely it means that the GPU is based on a modern architecture that has demonstrated support for (something like) CUDA.

I would suspect that the 2GB total memory is shared by the CPU and GPU but that both processors would have embedded memory and on the CPU that would act as a L3 cache and memory on the GPU would represent the screen buffers and a texture cache. As a guess I would say that the CPU probably has 16MB to 32MB of embedded memory while the GPU has 32MB to 64MB of embedded memory.

False. The Wii U has a GPGPU and a CPU.

so does the WiiU have an independent CPU?
then why it hasnt been named by Nintendo?

The GPU will use as much RAM as it needs from the 1GB when running games. And I'm pretty sure that over the WiiU's lifetime, Nintendo will optimize the OS to free memory from the remaining 1GB.

1GB for OS
1GB for CPU/GPU

It has been. It's a IBM Power7.

Who says it hasn't been named?
