Forums - Gaming - Dishonored dev feels players are “hungry” for non-linear games

VG247

Dishonored allows something of a sandbox approach to missions, which Arkane’s Harvey Smith believes is something gamers yearn for even if they missed out on the 1990′s games which inspired it.

Speaking to the EU PS Blog, Smith said that he has “great faith” in younger gamers even though they were raised on a diet of locked-down, cinematic shooters.

“When we release a game like this kids sometimes come to us and say ‘this game blew my mind; I didn’t know games could do this; I only played very linear games before,’” he said.

“That’s what we like to hear. I actually have more faith in the 13-year-olds as they’re playing things like Day Z or Dwarf Fortress or Eve Online. They’re hungry for highly interactive, non-dogmatic experiences, I think.”

Smith admitted that Dishonored can be a little more challenging than other games, both in terms of aggressive AI response to violence and in the patient emphasis on realistic stealth.

“We decided to go with ‘view cone’ based stealth. Enemies have a view cone. Their peripheral vision is weaker and they don’t see as well up high – it’s squashed so you can hide in the rafters. The deal is that if you’re in front of their view cone they see you, no matter what the lighting levels. Even if I turned out the lights right now, I’d still be able to see you, right? So we decided to go with something realistic,” Smith said of the stealth mechanics.

“The truth is that we tried all of the models you can think of. We tried the ‘pool of shadow’ model, but modern players would say the AI looks bad if I’m in a shadow and an enemy walks right by me. That looks dumb. They want a more reactive system. And that makes it a little more hardcore. To sneak, you really have to stay behind cover, lean out behind walls. It requires you to really know where an enemy is looking and avoid that range.”

Dishonored arrives on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in October.

Dishonored dev sick of sequels, responds to Gibeau’s ‘new IP’ warning

Dishonored developer Arkane believes that new IP can thrive this late in the console cycle if they are handled correctly. Executive producer Julien Roby has replied to claims made by EA’s Frank Gibeau that releasing new IP so late in the cycle is a mistake.

In an IGN interview, Roby was asked for his thoughts on Gibeau’s stance, “Well, you probably have some insight on that but I think as long as the game is good, whether it’s a new IP or not, if the game is good, it gets a good review and it’s marketed properly people will want to look at it.”

“Specifically now” Roby added, “because it’s been a few years where we’ve only got sequels of sequels of sequels of sequels. I think people are getting tired of just playing the same thing over and over. So I hope that they’re going to try Dishonored for the fact that it’s trying to do something a little different that those other games.”

What do you think? Is it a gamble to launch new IP this late, or does it really depend on the title in question?

Thanks IGN.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

When I read about a dev praising the reactions of 13-year-olds to an 18-rated game, I can only despair.

WHERE IS MY KORORINPA 3

13 year olds are playing Dwarf Fortress and Eve? If so not that many. A better example would have been Minecraft.

I want to be interested in Dishonered but every trailer I've seen makes the animations look awkward and the gameplay seem stiff. Hope I'm wrong in the end, as a sandbox is only as good as the gameplay that accompanies it

I want story driven games, where I can pursui the stroy straight foward like in God of War or Uncharted. I don´t need any freedom in games. Of course it sucks when the whole game is running shooting running shooting but if the shooting is made good then it could be fine as well. And gamers these don´t have fucking clue what they want. They say one thing and do another.

Dishonoured is definitely on my radar

This game has me interested.

I prefer media blackout these days for most games.

Thanks anyways.
