Forums - PC - Guild Wars 2 Personal Impressions

I'm at level 60 now, and have explored a lot of content. I can't give it a real review though at this time, but prior to me giving it's pros and cons, I will say this: Guild Wars 2 is the first real threat to World of Warcraft.

Positives:

+Free to play. Just doesn't get any better than that.
+Beautiful PvP. Absolutely wonderfully designed balance, thoroughly customizable, and infinite possiblities... Combos, traits, different skills with every weapon... it's like every game is different.
+Real dodge. No swing timers here fellas. You move away, you get away. It's skill based gaming, rather than just spamming abilities.
+Stunning graphics. This is quite possibly the best looking MMO I've ever seen. I haven't even maxed the graphics out yet.
+Multiple playstyles. Resource gathering, crafting, and simply finding new areas give experience, meaning you can do anything you want and still reach max level. Meaning, if you want to play a strict crafter, you can. You don't even have to set foot outside the city if you don't want to. If you want to explore the whole map and just run around, you can. If you want to just PvP your whole life, you can. You're not forced into doing anything you don't want to.
+Challenging. Damn, the dungeons are not walks in the park. They absolutely require coordination and skill.
+World vs. world mass battles. Amazing how many players get in there and the ensuing chaos.
+Beautiful artwork. I love how the game looks overall but the art style just steals the show.
+Pretty solid launch. There were some connection issues, trading post wasn't available initially, and some random bugs, but compared with other MMOs, this was the best I've experienced.
+World events. There are literally so many things happening randomly in the world that you just never run out of things to do.
+Extensive crafting. The professions in this game are very well thought out and are a game of their own.

Negatives:

-Story isn't told well. I get lost a lot about why am I doing this or why am I doing that because of the quest system. Sure, it makes it faster to not have to talk to the guy who wants you to do something but it also removes from the story experience.
-No person to person trading. I don't understand this bit. Why not allow two people to trade to each other? There's no cash on delivery system in the mail either. Everyone has to rely on the trading post, and it's not always up.
-Limited traveling options. Yeah there are waypoints and gates, but otherwise, you're running. This makes getting to new areas tedious and time consuming. This is especially evident in world PvP. When you die, you have to run such a long distance from the start location. Having played WoW, the mounts played a very large factor in the excitement of the game.
-Lore is messy, or rather, is not organized for new players. Well, I don't know why there's a mist war. I've been playing since the beginning but I still don't know. I also have no idea why the elder dragons are awakened. I could look it up outside the game but that would be kinda strange, wouldn't it?

There are very few negatives in this game. I'm a fan of WoW, but with time, GW2 can surpass it. This game has all the tools that WoW failed to achieve, and I believe that it will, in the future, be a serious threat to Blizzard's userbase. 9.5/10 for me so far.

Are there any public dungeons or are they all instanced?

the dungeons are instanced, but there are so many world events happening and they're really huge things that it seems like you're fighitng bosses in public all the time.

With massive battles? Are they PvP or raids against bosses?

against bosses. all the PvP is structured in a completely different area. World vs world or structured arena

I am lvl 80 for a week now and if you don't like to PVP, you should not expect too much from Guild Wars 2. There is no PvE content whatsoever after you max your character.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Finally finished downloading my copy. Can't wait to delve into it. I sort of missed out on GW1 but hopefully GW2 is just as good.

Is there some form of primer or journal in game where you can read up on the lore?

I am not that into Guild Wars lore either but Guild Wars 2 takes place like 250 years after Guild Wars 1 so it doesn't really matter what happened then. Check the guild wars wiki if you are still interested.
