Forums - Gaming Discussion - EA Labels boss: Xbox 720, PS4 are 'spectacular'

CVG

EA Labels president Frank Gibeau has labelled next generation consoles the company's currently making games for "spectacular".

Having said last week that Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 are due to launch "in about a year's time", the man in charge of the EA Sports, EA Games, Maxis and BioWare labels told GamesIndustry.biz the publisher is relishing the prospect of a new hardware generation.

"When you launch a new IP it needs to do something really, really remarkable, and that's easier to do when you have a new set of technology that gives you novel capabilities. This is the longest cycle that any of us have ever seen, and we're at the point where a little bit of fatigue has set in, and people are wondering what they can possibly do next.

"I've seen the machines that we're building games for, and they're spectacular. Gen 4 hardware is a huge opportunity, and it's going to lead to a huge growth spurt for the industry.

"The only thing that could really displace that is really high-end tablets and IPTV, and IPTV is further out than just a couple of years," he added. "But those are the only two places I see that kind of risk occurring, and the good news for EA is that we're going to publish across all of them. We might ultimately find that to our advantage."

Oskari Hakkinen, head of franchise development at Remedy, said last month that the next gen consoles his studio's also developing for represent "a quantum leap" from those currently available.

If Metal Gear Ground Zero is anything to go by, then yes, they are spectacular.

It still makes little sense for them to make a "quantum leap," if they're going to get stuck in with high dev costs and high hardware costs. Sony's going to help push themselves towards bankruptcy, for one.

They mention Microsoft's next system you know....

I´ve read it you know but you seem to only have skimmed through it or read what you want to see and blindly ignore the anti nintendo and pro PS in the article.

Are you sure you are reading the same article or are you reading the comments on the article. No where in that article is it being pro Playstation, its equally mentioning the next Xbox AND Playstation. Also Anti-Nintendo? More like lack of Nintendo which can mean pretty much anything at this point. But what I do find interesting is they call the next gen "GEN 4" or are they mentioning something else?

Vaio's being sarcastic.

agreed 100% I was chatting with mates about this earlier, I'd think that all the next gen systems aren't going to be doing anything crazy like trying to launch a new format of media or a new type of processor, both new xbox and playstation will probably be more similiar in build and architecture to a moderately high end pc than any console to date at its time of launch.
