I don't know about Microsoft but I'm pretty sure Sony will push the European launch of the PS4 back to Spring 2014 because they ALWAYS do that. European launches of Sony consoles HAVE to get pushed back, it's like a law or something.

Now if Microsoft does the same they'll basically hand over the next generation to Nintendo. The Wii U will have a not supply constrained christmas with decent game support (Mario Kart is a given) in 2013 and Nintendo certainly won't be afraid to drop the price of the system then if they need to. Microsoft / Sony would be extremely dumb to launch their consoles any later than christmas 2013.

agreed - especially if sony is out by holiday 2013.  it won't be much of a head start but still..why give your compitition any extra footing.  it's not like xbox (or ps3) are exactly selling well now.  if i were either company i'd want my next gen machines out soon.

The SNES waited two years to come out, yet it beat the Genesis. The PS2 waited a year to come out, yet it easily crushed the Dreamcast. Launch dates DO have an impact, but if you've got your ducks in a row, so to speak, you can overcome it.

By waiting to release the SNES, Nintendo turned a virtual "nobody" in the industry (Sega) into one of their chief competitors; and the Dreamcast was DOA because of Sega's mishandling of the Sega CD, Sega 32x and Sega Saturn along with their horrible financial position. Allowing the successor to the market leading console to launch 12 to 24 months before you has never really worked out to benefit anyone.
