Forums - Nintendo - Wii U To Be $200 And Launch November 18th?

Launching at 200$ would have some drawbacks but a lot of benefits. Drawbacks obviously being that they would leave money on the table in the short term and may have trouble to satisfy demand at this price. It's highly unlikely but I could see tham launching at this price because I think Nintendo is painfully aware that they really need to start strong and build a lead as high as possible before the other consoles launch. They just need the install base to have a chance at keeping third party support beyond 2013. Also a high install base will be beneficial in the long run because Nintendo can sell more software. Also, for a price of 200$ they pretty much undercut the PS360. There's no way Microsony can undercut Nintendo with their predecessors so it's pretty much guaranteed that Nintendo will have the place as the cheap mass market console, which is highly desirable because this console nearly always dominates.

Another benefit is that Nintendo would shit all over Pachters predictions...again. And that would be so so glorious.

I don't think they will launch at this price personally and I will buy the Wii U anyway, but for 200$ I would probably buy 2, one of each color...

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

no way will this be cheaper than the ps3 or xbox 360, unless they want to lose money on every console sold that is. its stronger, has more ram newer GPU and add to all that the cost of the tablet, logically its almost impossible of the WiiU is cheaper than the ps3/xbox 360

is it possible that they just lowered the specs all around to get it at this price?? Not saying thats whay happened, just painting a picture

It's significantly more powerful than a PS3, and includes an extremely expensive controller.

I really don't see it being $50 cheaper than the PS3.

I don't see it happening either, but it's not a totally ridiculous rumour seeing as nintendo are sitting on mountains of money from Wii/DS, maybe even literally. They could afford taking a huge loss.

But why would they? It's a huge risk, and there ought to be plenty of demand for the Wii U even at a significantly higher price.

Remember, Sony were sitting on mountains of money from the PS1 and PS2 back in 2006, and look where loss leading got them then. It took three years to get themselves out of that hole. The PS3 took a much bigger loss than huge, and the R&D costs and investments in CELL account for it's loses than the loss on each system. That said, you're right. Ninty have no real reason to, especially when the other next gen consoles will be arriving in a year and that should be the target for a big price drop.

One thought that just struck my mind: What about the bundled game(s)? They should push the price upwards, but Nintendo could save some money by making digital bundles.

I mean, pretty much everybody who purchase video games has internet connection nowadays...

That's never been Nintendo's philosophy, they don't like taking losses even if they have all the money in the world, True, but have they ever had this much money? + what you said about the 3DS. Again I don't hink it's likely, just saying it's in the realm of reality you know :) but considering the first year of the 3DS maybe Nintendo's decided to take losses at launch for the first time ever

They have had much more money, yes. That was when Wii was at its peak. Now their mountain of money has quickly shrunk, I think it was by approximately 50% in a few years. I don't think they want to lose much more

Nintendo's share price shrank by a great deal

THeir enormous cash reserves haven't really been dipped into, I don't think

But it's irrelevant because they're trying to make those reserves grow, not shrink

They made billions with the Wii alone, and have only lost a few hundred million of that so far. Correct me if im wrong people plox I think it was by approximately 50% in a few years. I don't think they want to lose much more

This is not really comparable, Sony took like a 300$ loss for each PS3 at launch. If Nintendo Launches the Wii U for 200 bucks without a pack in game we are talking about maybe  a 50$ loss at most. They could do it, but I think it's not their philosophy to do it.

no way in hell is that possible, you cant just lower the specs around release like this. how will all the games that were built up one the hardware work on it if they cut the specs? remember when sony were releasing the vita and rumers were that they cut the RAM in half, sony then came out and said you cant just do that, once u give a game some specs its done. the only thing they can do is lower hard drive space and types of screen on the tablet uses, and since it was a resistive touchscreen when they announced it was already a low budget screan. if it does go on for this price just know for sure that the console and tablet hardware will be the crappiest thing since the virtual boy

It's hard to believe Nintendo lowered the specs of the system just a few months before launch, specially since developers already start making games for it, they could improve the specs but not lowered the them.

I don't think there'll be a bundled game.

Nintendoland looks to be much more complete than Wii Sports ever was. Way more, in fact. Plus, there is already some evidence of it being a boxed game, like pre-order boxes in some pictures, like this:
