Forums - Politics Discussion - RNC: Anyone Watching? Thoughts? (Please keep it Civil)

So we are at the point where the RNC is happening this week and then next week we get into the DNC. We can make a thread for that one next week as well. Last night we had the first night of the RNC convention. Anybody have any thoughts on what you have watched so far? Any speeches you thought were good/bad? I thoght it was quite interesting that the Key note address by Chris Christie was expected to be him slamming barack Obama. Instead he did not mention the name "Obama" one time during his speech. A  bit surprising considering that historically the Key note speaker is usually always seen as the "attack dog" speech. Especially surprising when you think of how blunt Chris Christie can be. Never the less I thought his speech was direct and hit some key notes for his party's platform.

One aspect I thought was very interesting but not surprising was the excessive amount of comments made by left wing media individuals. Many comments were made about the how the quote "Republicans cant just tout out brown faces". Another media person was caught on tape saying the Romneys "are happy to have a party with black people drowning" referring to the hurricane going on at the time. And apparently Chris Mathews has been going bonkers lately repeatedly claiming that Republicans are playing the race card and implying racism. Another media person on NBC News recently claimed that the republicans are promoting the "N*#%erization of Obama" saying that they see him as the "scary black man."Then you had NBC News apparently not cover any minorities' speeches except for Nikki Haley's speech. Didn't cover the speech of Mia Love, nor the speech of Artur Davis. Then we saw Mia Love's wikipedia page get hacked over night with statements calling her a "dirty worthless whore", a "right wing hate machine" "like the house N____ she truly is."  It seems to be getting pretty heated and its sad seeing some of these things in the media but not surprising. Im not saying it dosn't go on with both sides but lately its been pretty sad seeing it.

As far as the speeches however I thought there were some good and some bad. The one that I did like was the one by Artur Davis. He really seemed to put a lot of meat into his. He was a former Democrat house representative who endorsed Obama in '08 and seems to now be supporting Romney. Here is his speech:

Anyone else have thoughts? Lets keep this consturctive. I welcome debate, but in a reasonable manner.

Also I find the best way to watch is streamed online, or CSPAN. A lot of the News media outlets of course put their own spin on things between and during speeches. it just gets annoying.

Here is a live stream:

I always find it funny how some people complain that the RNC has "too many minority speakers."

It really makes a few stupid assumptions

1) That minorities will be "tricked" by someone being the same as them. Apparently they can't listen to speeches and decide based on that?

2) That speaking at a national convention isn't important. It is... and it's HUGE for your political career. It's valuable practice and face time.

3) That it's bad minorities are overrepresented. If it was anything BUT the RNC, practically everybody who wasn't complaining would be wanting to throw compliments and medals at such a situation being the case.

Chris Christie´s speech was really his hype train getting started for 2016.

Well, that plan would only work if Romney loses the elections.

I havetn't had the time to see the RNC as I would like, and mexican politics have been also busy... so, I hope this will be a nice debate so I can get an idea of the RNC

people watched it??? Just politicans telling you, what they want you to hear. To be fair,I don't vote.

Looks like the second night just finished. The prime time speakers included: Condaleeza Rice former secretary of State, Current New Mexico Governor Susanna Martinez, and Vice Presidential Candidate Paul Ryan.

See their Speeches:

Condi Rice:

I actually thought She gave arguably the best speech of the night out of all the speakers. Some of the things she talked about were in line with some of my thinking especially when she started talking about America's financial situation and how by losing control of that we will lose control of our destiny. also her comments on education. She gave some really good lines in her speech and would recommend if you only listen to one hers was I thought delivered well and didn't have a large number of political rhetoric but a little more straight talk than other speakers. Her personal story towards the ending was nice as well about becoming secretary of state.

And this one wasn't in prime time, but I thought I would add this one...

lol @ Condi Rice criticizing Obama's foreign policy: what's he doing that you didn't do, or failing to do that you did? If anything, his foreign policy is W's just without the stupid cowboy bravado.

minus respect for Condi...

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Well the third and final night of the RNC ended. There were some interesting speakers, but one I thought that was one of the most unusual but actually even though it may have been different it was actually a bit humorous coming from Clint Eastwood... asking questions to an imaginary Obama. Here are the prime time speeches:

Marco Rubio:

Mitt Romney:

Will add this one when I get a good one copied over.

So far here is a link to where you can watch it on realclearpolitics...

Also interesting is that after Paul Ryans speech there were many news outlets and fact checkers saying he had some "false" claims. Even prominent fact checkers were saying this, when in fact when one looks through the script of his speech there were many so called "false" claims that were actually true.

One claim during Paul Ryans speech regarded a GM plant near his home town in Wisconsin. He stated this:

My home state voted for President Obama. When he talked about change, many people liked the sound of it, especially in Janesville, where we were about to lose a major factory.

A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: “I believe that if our government is there to support you … this plant will be here for another hundred years.”  That’s what he said in 2008.

Well, as it turned out, that plant didn’t last another year.  It is locked up and empty to this day.  And that’s how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight.

Because of those statements media outlets and "fact checkers" looked into it and claimed that since he was apparently blaming Obama for the plants closure (which he wasn't) they said the plant stopped production in December of 2008. Actually as some others looked into it the fact is that most production of SUVs and such had ended in December of 2008 and the plan was to close it, but however the plant was still making Trucks until April of 2009. Yet many "fact Checkers" said Paul Ryan made "false" claims about it. There were other statements they claimed were "false" by Paul Ryan but in fact some of those statements he told the truth, he just left out some arguments that the left would say about his stances on those topics.

So we have fact checkers now fact checking the fact checkers.
