I notice a lot of people mentioning Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games as an example of how successful third parties can be on the Wii. It has friggin Mario in the title and likely most people buying it don't realize that it's not a Nintendo first party game.

It's kind of funny that the Wii's most successful third party game is one that most people probably thought was a Nintendo produced game.

See my "advertising" post just a couple above yours. The game was HEAVILY ADVERTISED!!!! How can nobody get this? It is like the facts are oblivious to the public.

By the way, anyone want to explain all the PS3 flops? Are publishers making waves about that right now? Or are they being biased towards Wii? This is the first time I have read anything like this about any console but it may not be so bad if there are legit concerns all around.

Why would anyone, especially non-gamers dismiss a game just because it's not made by Nintendo? Most buyers can't tell the difference between a first party and a third party game.

So, what is his point?

Except for the third party games that sold well, third party games haven't sold well?

The problem with trying to frame it this way is it only works when the console in question is not the market leader. Which makes me wonder where all of IGN's doom-and-gloom articles about how the PSP can't sell anything at all, first or third party. I mean, The GameCube had to put up with editorials like that from fay one and the N64 even had to deal with one its first year.

Where is the outrage about Sony's 2nd-place also-ran handheld going nowhere in the market and mainly being bought by hackers?

Edit: and YES, if you don't risk anything, you do not get any reward. Suda 51's problems with No More Heroes is frustrating, yes, but he might want to consider that Killer 7 wasn't exactly a screaming success on the GC or PS2. In fact, third parties should probably consider that third party games flopped on PS2 all the time. And unfortunately for the complaining third parties, their veto power over Nintendo's market share is now gone. They don't wanna make DS games? That's ok, have fun making games for a market that is insistent on not buying any of them. They don't wanna make Wii games? Sure. Roll the dice on the 360 and the PS3. Just don't complain that costs are too high.

It sounds arrogant, yes. But it's also the reality. Their lack of adaptation to the new market is not Nintendo's problem. Their lack of effort and consideration of the Wii as a substandard platform only fit for shovelware is not Nintendo's problem either. Their schizophrenic refusal to support the market leader based on self-fulfilling prophecies like demographics isn't either. Their reluctance to support the Wii and the DS initially only gives Nintendo more money and thus more power. They only have themselves to blame now.

Just wanted to say that this was a really good piece of writing!

this how the way i see it third party japanese games on Wii, 360 and PS3 are bad in general

so if japanese developer i try to make games on PS2, DS or PSP

it's simple Japan is becoming fully Portable gaming lovers Period.

I'd agree with that statement in general, but that doesn't stop developers from trying.  There are far more JRPGS announced for the Wii than the PS3 and 360 right now. Lots of artistic games like Oboro Muramasa and King's Story are in development for the console as well.   It's true that the recession has hit the home console market hard in Japan, but the 3rd party market that's left really is given no choice but to make Wii games if they wish to develop for a home console.

Exactly!

When a japanese developer plans to bring a JPRG or other Japan oriented title, is going to put it in the console that sells the most software and has lowest costs, or is it going to put in a console that struggle to sell more games than machines?

Support is coming. At least in Japan. Just wait a couple of month till Square Enix drops the bomb ;)

think about it what is the point of games on the wii  if it's going to bomb because japanese Wii gamers are buying Wii fit, Mario Galaxy, Wii Play and all the other mini games

OK, lets put it this way.

Imagine that a year from now the install bases in Japan are as follow

WII: 9,5 Millions

PS3: 4 Millions

That numbers are more or less acurrate, in fact I think I am beeing kind with the PS3

So imagine, SquareEnix, to put an example, anounces (insert ultra hyped JRPG). In wich console you think it is going to sell the most? Japanese buy whatever SE does, but, will the company risk their franchises and force people to buy PS3s just to play (insert ultra hyped JRPG)? Or will they release it in a console with, at leaste 2x the user base and proven good results (after all DQS and Chocobo selled quite well considering the type of games they are)

Just think about it

dude DQS sold very well on the wii in japan  but Chocobo Wii Flop Hard in japan also

they are  currently at one win / one lose situation

Plus since DQ sells mostly come from japan it's going to bomb in US and EU

EX: DQ VIII  only sold over 400k in US on PS2 but Millions in japan

Meanwhile, Dragon Quest VIII has sold over four million copies worldwide, including over 400,000 copies of the game in North America.

and let's look at tales games

The figure accounts for sales of 20 titles, including fan disks and "gaiden" side-stories, since the original Tales of Fantasia on the Super Famicom. Not surprisingly, Japan gets the bulk of the sales at 87%. America comes in second at 8%, with Europe lagging at 3% and the rest of Asia at 2%.

You are not looking the whole situation. Before answering, you should check all the numbers. After all VgChartz is for that.

Chocobo Dungeon Wii-------->100 k in 4 weeks

Chocobo Dungeon 1 PSX----->1,14 m LTD

Chocobo Dungeon 2 PSX----->580 k LTD

Flopped? Mmmmmm, I think is a 2 win/o lose to SE

Freaking A... all that really would fix this problem is advertising. Better advertising will make for better sales. Anyone seen a No More Heroes commercial? Outside the hardcore, nobody I know even heard of the title.

Metroid Prime 3, while sad in sales (in my opinion), shows that the problem is NOT only relegated to third parties. Someone should show these guys how to advertise. Halo 3, while sub-par at best, was super advertised and sales definitely reflect that.

How come nobody realizes there might be problems within this department more than anywhere else? Madden is boasted as an XBOX 360 game first (and also on...) and where does it sell best? You guessed it.

well said.

Look these article or developers failed to see one important point here, There is really only a few M game on the Wii and they expect everyone of it sold massively. this is an unfair comparison, How many M rate game failed on the PS3 and Xbox360??? the point is for like every 10 M rated game out there only a few sell successfully and the rest just floped. Same with Wii's none rated M games, for ever 10 games out there only a few that sell high #s. Untill Wii getting the same # of M rated games like the other HD consoles then we can really tell if Wii users want those game of or not.

Pikmin sold 1.61 million copies on the Gamecube (16th best selling game on it), do you think if EA had made Pikmin that it would have gotten that many sales?  Wario Ware: Touched sold 2.18 million on the DS, how many copied would have sold if it instead it had been a similar game made by EA?  If another company had made the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games with different characters in it do you think it would have made it to a million?

Legend you need to get with it and get a Wii.

Sad but true... (Matt Casamasina's blog)...

However... I'm already putting alot of resources in buying 3rd-party Wii-games.

Heck, i even bought Table Tennis from Rockstar, SSX Blur from EA and The Godfather from EA besides all the AA+ titles out on Wii (mostly from Nintendo except for Res4, ResUMBRELLA, GH3 etc...)

So, it just looks like there aren't enough of 'us'...

But what the hell... I really don't care anymore... I'm already getting a PS3 in Februari so who cares... ...
