I notice a lot of people mentioning Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games as an example of how successful third parties can be on the Wii. It has friggin Mario in the title and most people buying it likely don't realize that Nintendo didn't make the game.

It's kind of funny that the Wii's most successful third party game is one that most people probably thought was a Nintendo produced game.

Why would anyone, especially non-gamers dismiss a game just because it's not made by Nintendo? Most buyers can't tell the difference between a first party and a third party game.

Pikmin sold 1.61 million copies on the Gamecube (16th best selling game on it), do you think if EA had made Pikmin that it would have gotten that many sales?  Wario Ware: Touched sold 2.18 million on the DS, how many copied would have sold if it instead it had been a similar game made by EA?  If another company had made the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games with different characters in it do you think it would have made it to a million?

Legend, Your hate for nintendo is so obvious, its making you look foolish now.

If EA could conjure up a way to make a orignial IP like Pikmin it would have sold well across all platforms.

I don't hate Nintendo, I've bought Nintendo consoles in the past as well as Microsoft, Sony, and Sega ones.

I applaude you for being your own person and not a falower like many in the world.

Legend, here is alittle lessson for you in life..

Actions speak louder than words.

3rd parties gotta market. i havent seen 1 3rd party commercial on tv since the wiis been out. in fact, i havent seen any ads from 3rd parties on the net/in print that wasnt from a game-related site/magazine and even then, it was very limited.

im gonna use this anology that alot of you wii users (which is 100% bias but oh well) use on us ps3 users and maybe you will understand where myself and others are coming from... ps3 was expected to sell more at this point because of the ps2's high amount of sales right? isnt that what yal say??? well if the gamecube nor the n64 were known for selling a high amount of mature rated games on the system why all of a sudden would developers and publishers all of a sudden flock to it?? the fact that people are naming mario and sonic as the great 3rd party savior is sad..... im not saying this to flame so say what you want .. i dont care.. but the truth is that this is just how its gonna be.... the wii will continue to get the dumbed down side story game to fit the people they are selling systems too.. my grandma and my girlfriend...both of which dont buy M rated games or any game near that category.. yea they might get a couple here and there but not as much as ps360

I (somewhat) agree with you ...

The Gamecube and N64 were not known for their "Mature" titles in a large part because third party publishers were alienated by Nintendo when the big push for "Mature" titles began (roughly at the time of the N64's release); this put Nintendo into a trapped position of being unable to get a decent library of "Mature Titles" because they could not demonstrate strong sales for "Mature" titles, because they lacked a decent library of "Mature" titles.

The Wii is in a different position being that publishers who have released "Mature" titles are likely to continue to release similar titles, and the hardware sales alone will justify attempts by third party publishers in genres which have not been particularly popular. Basically, if a company only has to sell a game to (less than) 1% of a system's userbase in order to break even it is fairly safe to attempt something unusual if it is attached to a popular IP or Genre.

Another problem is that while third parties pussyfoot and muddlefuck around, the market is moving without them.

To paraphrase a Churchill quote, they have a choice between shame and supporting Nintendo. I feel that they'll choose shame and have supporting Nintendo thrown in a little later, with worse terms than if they had done it earlier..

"Right now all the owners of Wii are Nintendo fans."

".... the wii will continue to get the dumbed down side story game to fit the people they are selling systems too.. my grandma and my girlfriend..."

Oh yeah, by the way, both of these statements cannot be true at the same time. Wii-skeptics might wanna get on the same page once in a while.

Has anyone pointed out which adult games haven't lived up to expectations yet? Do we actually have an example?

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

When third parties give Wii titles the same effort as PS3 and 360 titles, then you can comment on this topic. Before that time, anyone that makes such assumptions makes themselves out to be a fool. Name one big budget third party Wii title that has bombed? Their isn't one because they haven't been making any.

So, what is his point?

Except for the third party games that sold well, third party games haven't sold well?

The problem with trying to frame it this way is it only works when the console in question is not the market leader. Which makes me wonder where all of IGN's doom-and-gloom articles about how the PSP can't sell anything at all, first or third party. I mean, The GameCube had to put up with editorials like that from fay one and the N64 even had to deal with one its first year.

Where is the outrage about Sony's 2nd-place also-ran handheld going nowhere in the market and mainly being bought by hackers?

Edit: and YES, if you don't risk anything, you do not get any reward. Suda 51's problems with No More Heroes is frustrating, yes, but he might want to consider that Killer 7 wasn't exactly a screaming success on the GC or PS2. In fact, third parties should probably consider that third party games flopped on PS2 all the time. And unfortunately for the complaining third parties, their veto power over Nintendo's market share is now gone. They don't wanna make DS games? That's ok, have fun making games for a market that is insistent on not buying any of them. They don't wanna make Wii games? Sure. Roll the dice on the 360 and the PS3. Just don't complain that costs are too high.

It sounds arrogant, yes. But it's also the reality. Their lack of adaptation to the new market is not Nintendo's problem. Their lack of effort and consideration of the Wii as a substandard platform only fit for shovelware is not Nintendo's problem either. Their schizophrenic refusal to support the market leader based on self-fulfilling prophecies like demographics isn't either. Their reluctance to support the Wii and the DS initially only gives Nintendo more money and thus more power. They only have themselves to blame now.

Just wanted to say that this was a really good piece of writing!

Bump for awesomeness...

Rayman Raving Rabbids says Hello, and soon its sequel will say hi too.

EA's track record with such titles like this are to develop them and shit them out the door quietly, so as not to draw attention away from Madden and Need for Speed.

This is either a very clever metaphor, or an extremely funny typo.

Oh I intended it to be like that. :D
