Hmm. Fad "A practise followed enthusiastically by a number of people for a limited period of time; as, the latest fad in fashion."

Could that be the Wii controller?

I cannot be put any better. Remember EyeToy, it was really fun at first, but since then it has been gathering dust

This is exactly what I'm thinking. Trying to word what I'm about to say maybe tricky....

1)Personally I think the Wii motion controller will be put to one side fairly quickly once sales of Wii sport and Wii play slow down (a selling point for the system).

2) I can't see anyone other than Children/teenagers/few young adults using the controller for other games.

3)Personally I don't see many parents playing games with their children outside of the Wii sports/Play package (That use the motion controller as a main selling point and function).

4) This is why I think it could be described as maybe a 'fad'. Of course Sony is doing the six-axis to try and get a finger in that pie too.

5) Yes I can understand Nintendo trying to do something different, but without the original controller - to me it 's just another Nintendo system doing the same games as it did the last 2 or more generations(You know - as in Mario & others. And that doesn't appeal to me. I prefer more adult games like Silent Hill, Resident Evil. War games like Dynasty Warriors and others like it. (yep a no brainer)

fishamaphone - no. The Wii3 will be released *with* the PS4 or 730. Not before.

If your talking about cult buying being a fad.

Food is a fad.

Power bills are a fad.

Water bills are a fad.

Rent is a fad.

Guess... almost everything in the world is a fad.

A fad is not determined by price. However alot of people have previously stated, the Wii can not be a fad because it costs 250$.
Actually working minimum wage it would take over a week when you count taxes. However if your making minimum wage where I live... Rent for a 1 bedroom apt, is around 400$, power will run you around 100, water will run 50, phone will run you 50, and you add car insurance, car payment. Your well over 1000$/month bills. Holy shit. That is more than you make working minimum wage, full time. Lifes a bitch, then you die. Welcome to america where the goverment wants you to die. (That's why they wont give medicare to anyone where I live)

Maybe you should pay attention. Since you don't seem to be reading the definitionm here it is again:

a temporary fashion, notion, manner of conduct, etc., esp. one followed enthusiastically by a group.

a temporary fashion, notion, manner of conduct, etc., esp. one followed enthusiastically by a group.

 2 times for just you.

Please note that the word GROUP is in bold font. Food is bought by EVERYONE. EVERYONE pays bills. EVERYONE buys clothes. Not just a group, but EVERYONE.

So....are you in in agreement that the Wii is not cheap? I didn't get what you were trying to point out in your last paragraph. $400 for a one bedroom apt? Now that is cheap, but that's relative. Here it runs at $900+.

Maybe (kinda plausible) the lead will be so big that they won't be able to catch up on Wii...

Cause: When is Halo 4 coming, and is it coming to X360 or the next Microsoft system...

And i'f PS3 is at 7-8 mil and Wii at 16-20 mil I don't see it coming back because of lacking support

If the PS3 is at 7-8 million, the 360 would be at around 13-14 million. New games coming for PS3/360 are multiplatform. So that gives a 20-24 million person userbase. That is a low PS3 number, and a low 360 number vs a high Wii number. ;)

By the standard definition any of the market leading consoles and handhelds could have been called a fad at the height of their popularity.

Anyways, had the Wii launched and been selling worse than the Dreamcast in North America (and Dramatically worse than the Gamecube worldwide) it would have been foolish to claim that it would be the most successful console in the long run; why do Sony fans think that it is not foolish to claim that the PS3 will be dominant when it is selling worse than the Dreamcast in North America, and worse than the Gamecube on a worldwide basis?

See, calling the controller functions a fad is completely different from calling the console a fad.  But this is more on the developer end than the consumer end.  I think probably for the next 18 months or so, you're going to see every major developer try to integrate motion control into every game.  After this point, they'll have toyed with the idea enough to know what works and what doesn't.  Then you'll start to see games that only use motion sensing where it works really well.  By that point, probably half the major new releases won't utilize motion control.  But this is probably going to be because of developer evolution more than consumer demand, IMHO.

 That's simple.

Because the PS3 will be around for 8 years. Will the Wii? Becuase in 8 years the Wii will have graphics like... well... like it does now. But like a 10 year old computer.

If the Wii is dominate, and games for the PS3/360 start go go away, I hate to say it, but I saw the death of home PCs with this generation of game consoles. However if the Wii wins, Computers will stamp game consoles out... agian.

That's neat... when you use the BB code quote, it dont put it 'quote in quote' in my window. Oh well.

Exactly, the controller on the wii is a fad, and without that, the Wii is a GameCube. (ok, more like a x-box but still, a last gen console)

Great minds think alike, plus you forgot the best game series of this generation GTA. Can you ever see this coming to wii? (Don't use Manhunt as reasoning)

OFF TOPIC ALERT!  OFF TOPIC ALERT!

Geeze, it's almost like Kwaad made this thread as a thinly-veiled excuse to re-post all his "bash the Wii" arguments...  Wonder why that is...

Yeah. I don't think of the Nintendo console being a fad, just the control method. I understand what you're saying about developers trying to incorporate motion control into games and then seeing what works and what doesn't to sell games. However, I don't see a family get together using the controller to play Resident Evil with the kids... The reason why I say that is because quite a few consoles are being sold for the 'family appeal' where the sports and that are concerned. Outside of that I feel it's going to be your usual game players and not the family. Question is now...will that make a real difference?
