I've been bashed for calling the Wii a fad, over, and over, and over. Why is being a fad bad? Look at Furby. A horrifically stupid, waste of money. Sold 20million in a 12 month period.

How is being a fad bad? Had furby not been a fad, it would have probibally sold 500,000. Not 40x that number like it did.

How is being a Fad *GREAT* for a new console? It will skyrocket it's userbase through the roof early on, thus causing devs to make games for that console, and give it it's longevity.  

I wanna ask the Wii-atics this.

Why is the Wii being a fad bad? Becuase if the PS3 was a fad, it would be blowing the doors off the wii, and the Wii would never be heard from again.

imo no it isn't or rather it MIGHT not be.

if the wii sales plummets to say under 10k in a week or less. and new games stop being made for the system, then it will be a FAD, but until then the wii Cannot be a Fad.

Fad's have Definate Endings and until the wii has said ending, we cannot say it is a fad or not. if the wii dwindles yet remains a steady seller for over the next 2-3 years ..again not a fad. fads are shortlived products (short as it 1 maybe 2 years of "greatness" then bam "gone"..

magic the gathering was a fad- it is still around but no where near what it used to be- the peak lasted ~2 years

paper dresses were a fad -lasted a year or two

furby- fad- still around but it is not a "must have this product" item

Currently the PS3 is more of a FAD than the Wii is...

an initial must have release-shootings, thefts etc...

 now extreme diminished demand for the product

See, you're being dishonest here.  Usually when *you* use the word "fad" to describe Nintendo, you're using it in conjunction with a sentence that implies Nintendo's success is short-lived, and in two more years, they're going
to suddenly be irrelevant.  The offense isn't the word "fad," it's the context you're using it in.

I guarantee you, use the sentence "Wii is a fad, and will dominate the majority of this generation" in a post, like you seem to be saying here, and you won't get *nearly* as much negative backlash.

If the Wii drops below 10k/week in america. Nintnedo should cancel the Wii, as the GameCube rarely dropped below 12k/week.

52/week * 10k = 520,000

If the wii drops below 50k/week I would say the Wii is a fad.

I think the Wii is a fad, becuase of it's price on consoles. Alot of people say the Wii is expensive. Actually the Wii is the cheapest console released in the last 10 years outside of the GameCube, and the DreamCast.

The GBA Micro is a fad item. Nintendo follows fads. I dont know if anyone else has noticed this, but that is how nintendo is starting to appeal to the masses by creating fassion trends. "My GBA Micro is 4x smaller than your PSP and looks cooler!"

Fads do sell like hotcakes tho. My question is, when will the Wii loose the Fad status, and how much will it effect it.

As the current 'fad' for the Wii will bolster sales way up, wich will give it the software, wich will help it in the long-term. The question is, how much will it help it?

When I say the Wii fad will end in 1-2 years. I dont mean it's sales will vanish and go away. I just poked a new model furby a few weeks ago. Furby sure as hell didnt go away.

I think the Wii is running on a landslide of great publicity. (fads run on publicity) (and for you, the other poster guy who said the PS3 was a fad, what are you smoking? The PS3 hasnt had good publicity untill a few weeks ago, and there isnt that much good going around still) The Wii is hip, hop, hot, and in the culture today. "What? You dont have a Wii? You need one!" My question is, when the publicity ends, the novelty factor ends. 

I do *NOT* think the Wii will dominate the majority of this generation. I infact think that is not right. The PS3 will domintate the most of this gen.

However the Wii3 will be released when this generation is really over. It is unlikely that a PS4, or 720 will come out in the next 6 years. I say 8-10 years. That will be a damn long generation for the weakest home console ever launched. (Compare any console ever launched to a modern PC. The PS3 is the fastest, with the 360 close behind, and the Wii, is not much faster than the original x-box launched 6 years ago, wich wasnt near as fast as a home PC when it launched)

I think that the Wii will loose it's fad status Q3 2007 or Q2 2008. I've got my money on Q2 2008, but it could happen Q3 2007. 

The reason why most Wii fanbots probably get upset about it is because the term "fad" implies something short lived and not here to stay.
