Also, I have a question for those who picked up a 3DSXL: Is there any way to keep your friends without having to re-register all of them or have all of them re-register you? That's honestly the biggest barrier for me with getting an XL. I want all my friends to transfer and not have to put all the codes in again! Even if I do put all the codes in, not all of them may re-add me! Arrggh.

If you're able to keep your old 3DS in any way (either by only buying the 3DSXL without exchanging it for the old 3DS, or if they allow you to keep it long enough), you can do a system transfer in the Settings menu. 

That will allow your 3DSXL to be exactly as your old 3DS was, same friend list, same FC, same downloaded games, same data, etc. etc. 

If you're not able to do that, then yes, you'll have to re-register all your friends and they'll have to re-register you as well, because your new 3DSXL, without system transfer, will generate a new FC.

I saw people re-registering friends after they got their XL so I wasn't sure if everyone had to do it.  I'm definitely keeping my regular 3DS and now I'll get an XL and transfer everything over.

Yeah, absolutely EVERYTHING transfers - including your play coins and pedometer counts. EVERYTHING.

I couldn't do the system transfer, since my GAME store didn't let me keep my 3DS long enough to do it. I've recovered most of my friend list, so it's no biggie. What bothered me the most was losing over 200 coins >_>.
