Forums - Nintendo - Assassin’s Creed 3 on Wii U is missing some graphical features, didn’t have enough time to properly port

Soundwave said

I doubt the Wii U can comfortably run 1080p for things that go beyond Nintendo Land style graphics.

1080p requires a lot more processing power than people think. If it was something easy to do on Wii U, developers would be jumping on that because it'd be a quick and easy way for them to add value to their Wii U project, a lot of these games are on PC (Arkham City, Mass Effect 3, etc.).

Theoretically, the GPU rumored to be in the WiiU (Radeon HD 4850) is quite capable of doing graphics beyond Nintendoland in 1080p, at 60fps no less.

Some food for thought from a post that HappySqurriel made in another thread:

"The Radeon HD 4850 was able to render multiple games that were released for the HD consoles at above 1080p@60fps ... The technology required to hit this mark is old, low cost, with low energy consumption; and there is little reason to doubt the Wii U will be able to do this."

@crono " I don't think marginally better graphics are going to sell PS4/720 over WiiU. Not in a down economy."

But you believe that Wii U will sell to people who already have a PS360 for marginally better graphics, or do you think they'll be interested in the controller. Im thinking controller, but the thing is you DONT know anything about SOny or MS next system, we have no idea what they have instore why assume that all it will be is marginally better graphics that WIi U? ANd if it does work for Wii U why not the other two

Based on what Epic has said as recently as May, what he suggests isn't incredibly far off:

Epic also basically said at Comicon (when they debuted Fortnite) that the true graphics enthusiasts are going to be gaming on their PCs next gen.

Microsoft and Sony could still "up" their specs a bit, and we know that Durango and Orbis will be more powerful than WiiU, but in order to fully dwarf the WiiU next gen, you're talking expensive boxes that would generate a lot of heat.  And I think Microsoft and Sony know this.

Microsoft seems more focused on making a multimedia hub for the living room than pushing for cutting-edge power, and Sony is in no position to pull another PS3 situation this time around.

Assassin's Creed 3 Wii U is starting to sound like a really bad port

"Well get this: Assassin's Creed III is up and running on the Wii U. I watched a PR rep play the Battle of Chesapeake Bay section (the one with the ships from E3) and was initially impressed. Dynamic shadows and wave effects make for a very organic game world. It's busy, dramatic… the console runs it with relative ease. At least on first glance…

The bad news: The PS3 version was playing beside it – and the difference is night and day. Right now, PS3's version of Assassin's Creed III is, simply put, better. Even gamers without my robot eyes would be able to see the difference.

Smoother edges, better frame-rate, more detailed textures… it's akin to the kind of difference we used to see in multiplatform games when the PS3 version would look shaky in comparison to Xbox 360 release. It could change before release of course, but that's how it is right now."

So much for 1080p 60fps, it sounds like it's currently strugling to match 30fps @ 720p.

@TheVoxelman on twitter

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

Its an early game for the console, I doubt its from lack of trying

The PS1 to PS2 difference was, lets be honest, more polygons, higher res textures.  SNES to NES: more sprites, more colors, higher res.  Tech was much more limiting back then than it is now.  And I don't know the "finances", but I do know the market and in this economy no one is going to buy a console that costs over 400 dollars.  At least, not enough to get yourself an install base.  What is the difference betwee Wii and WiiU?  High definition, more polygons, higher res textures, better shader effects.  Whats going to be the difference between PS3 and PS4?  The models on PS3 games already look spectacular, so increasing the polygon count isn't going to buy you much more visual fidelity.  Increasing the texture resolution?  Its already in HD, anything higher is a waste of resources since TVs can't display anything higher.  Better shader tech?  Yeah, that's probably about it.  You'll get the edges of eye candy to improve, and little else.

Unless they want to bring everything into 4k.  In which case cost is going to go well beyond 400 dollars, software development costs (already measured in the 10s of millions) is going to skyrocket, and most devs will decide it isn't worth the effort for the added costs.  Just more units they have to sell in order to be profitable.

You see, it doesn't matter if PS4 or Durango come out with something 20X more powerful than the WiiU.  Developers aren't going to commit the kind of resources it would need to in order to take advantage of that hardware, because at the end of the day you wouldn't even be able to tell the difference in the living room.

Nintendo has made the smart move.  And I think Sony and Microsoft will follow suit.

This is a great post.  It summarizes exactly what I've been telling oniyide and pezus in other threads the past couple of week.  If and when PS4 is reveiled to not be a huge generational leap like they're expecting, I really want to see if the two of them suddenly do an about face and embrace this new strategy of minimal next-gen leaps all of a sudden.  Will be interesting to see.

I dont really believe that dodgy source. I think the game will be better on the Wii U and im not even gonna buy it.

Hmm I was going to buy it. Well if they didn't have enough time to put in the effects etc.    I will not have enough time to buy the game. What a shame the WiiU wasn't announces last year that would have given them enough time... Oh wait!....

Dear third party developers. Don't you dare to complain that none of your games will sell on a Nintendo platform!!!!
