Forums - Gaming - A look at Unity 4 - next-gen engine

In short, no. Just looked like an exceptionally boring (before the skateboard) then dumb (after the skateboard) Pixar movie. Will stick with the Cry and Unreal engines, while seeing if the Frostbite and Anvil engines (amongst others) keep up.

well the tech demo looks good, but not as impressive as other tech demo's. skin rendering also doesnt seem to be that great it seems his face has a more "plasticy" feel than actual skin. i dont know if there using something like maya's subsurface scartering but the results arent really that impressive, also particle and fluid effects seem to be sub par mostly when compared to unreal 4 and cryEngine. also wasnt impressed with the cloth simulation at all, look at how his tie feels so stiff most of the video

how dare you call any pixar movie boring :( also this is noo way near the quality pixar offers! also a tech demo isnt about being fun its more about demonstarting the techonolgy, which in my opinion the tech demo failed to impress

The video wasn't trying to showcase any specific game, though. The engine performs and looks fantastic, regardless of what is stacked up against (just why I didn't add that portion of the title to the thread title).

it in no way looks fantstic specially when compated to other next gen tech domo's, hell quantic dreams kara's tech demo blows this one away and that was one year old tech

Well, since it's obviously not factual, neither side is wrong.

To me, it looks like a next-gen engine and makes its point above current gen technology (which is the purpose). And no, Quantic Dream's newest engine does not outperform this. TUnity 4's polygon count is higher and use of anti-aliasing is better, among other obvious advantages.

ofcourse the poly count is higher thats is a next gen demo, but the skin rendering and facial animations (which is what mostly was shown in the kara tech demo and what we can and should compare is skin rendering and charecter models in which kara beats this tech demo

Again, I disagree, especially since I know all of the ins and outs of that Kara demo. It just doesn't top this.

Still, I don't want to turn the topic into a needless, off-topic battle. So just agree to leave it here.

ohh i certainly am not battling with you lol,  were just discussing the tech demo, may i ask where did you read all the in and outs of the kara tech demo? digital foundy?

Perhaps you should take a run through VGC history and understand my name when paired with anything Quantic Dream. :P

In short, I have a specific connection (fortunately for me - though I'm not @ liberty to reveal it).

ohh cool lol are you an animator or game developer?

Unity is a very cheap engine that's gaining lots of traction in the developers world. They are disrupting the Unreal Engine market, with huge marketshare in the iOS/Android world, and it's probable that they will gain marketshare in the pc/handheld/home console in the next years. Very easy to use and to compile to different targets, isn't as powerful as other engines, but it's a very cheap and good enough alternative.

I love Unity, but I don't think that looked anywhere close to the Unreal 4 tech video.

Also, this isn't really an engine thing, but the colors were very muted throughout that video.

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

I could tell it was just a demo, but it just reminded me of all the Pixar movies. And personally rather leave those graphics styles in the Pixar movies.
