so its gonna be goodbye Bluray with 100 disc packs and hello too HVD. Man I just started buying Blurays. This is the reason I wanted to stay Digital download only.
When I saw the thread title I thought it meant that games were going to be using 4K textures.

Almost every movie ever made has been shot on film excluding a few movies from the past decade. The films aren't digital and don't have pixels, but they have quality comparable to at least digital 4k resolution, even movies from the 60's, hence the reason why you see older films being remastered on blu-ray.

Great news. I'm glad to see the ps4 will be ready for 4K movies. I've already been looking to upgrade my 1080p projector but so far there is only 1 4k projector available, still 'a bit' out of my price range at 25k :/

Maybe some arcade games will be using 4K as well, a 4K picture viewer will be awesome too.
Whether you can use it all depends on how big a field of view you want. If you want to enjoy movies at the optimal THX recommended distance (1.2 x diagonal screen size) then 2160p is very useful.

@Selnor Do you think your digital downloads will be upgraded to 4K for free? I rather hang on to a backwards compatible dvd / blu-ray collection then trusting a server.

They're not pushing a new format, they're just placing higher resolution footage on the same blu-ray disc.

Because I rent for a 1 time only. Even when I own a film, I watch like once a year. got rid of my DVD collection of about 600 films 5 years ago. Im gona be doing the same with Bluray in 2-3 years.

Exactly. The standard 2K digital cinemas that you have everywhere actually show a down converted version of the movie. A pristine 35mm copy looked better. Too bad the sound of old movies never quite matches up with the picture quality they can get from 35mm film.
No wonder since before DTS came around with external CDs carrying the sound you only had the analog soundtrack printed on the film itself.
Awesome! Now I just need a $25,000 monitor to play it!

I was talking about the TVs, though "format" was the wrong word to use... :/

It worked very well with the PS3 though, same with the Xbox. Many people bought HDTV's for HD consoles.
